MARBLEHEAD ? A 58-year-old man who died yesterday in an apparent drowning while diving approximately two miles off of Marblehead harbor has been identified as Gregory Cole, of Westfield.
A statement from the office of Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett says Foul play is not suspected. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death. The facts and circumstances leading up to his death remain under investigation.According to DA spokesman Carrie Kimball Monahan the man was scallop diving with two other men near Satan’s Rock in Salem Sound.At approximately 10:15 a.m. the operator of the boat called in a “diver down” to the Marblehead Harbormaster after one of the divers failed to surface. The Harbormaster and police responded. According to a press release issued by the the US Coast Guard, it launched a rescue crew aboard a 29-foot boat and from its station in Gloucester and the air station in Cape Cod sent a search-and-rescue crew aboard a helicopter.
Monahan said the Massachusetts State Police dive team recovered the body at 2:30 p.m.
