MARBLEHEAD ? A 59-year-old Westfield man died Tuesday in what the Essex County District Attorney’s office is calling an apparent drowning.The unidentified man was scuba diving approximately two miles off Marblehead harbor.According to DA spokeswoman Carrie Kimball-Monahan, the man was scallop diving with two other men near Satan’s Rock in Salem Sound.At approximately 10:15 a.m. the operator of the boat called in a “diver down” to the Marblehead harbormaster after one of the divers failed to surface. The harbormaster and police responded. According to a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, it launched a rescue crew aboard a 29-foot boat and from its station in Gloucester, and the air station in Cape Cod sent a search-and-rescue crew aboard a helicopter.Kimball-Monahan said the Massachusetts State Police dive team recovered the body at 2:30 p.m.Foul play is not suspected, but the cause and manner of death will be determined by the chief medical examiner. The incident is under investigation.The identity of the diver is being withheld pending notification of family members.
