Steve Krause

July 24, 2014 by Steve Krause

For those who still have a yen for summer baseball and softball, fear not. There?s still plenty of action, beginning tonight in Rochester, N.H., when the Lynn 14U softball team begins its quest for a New England championship.Friday, at Wyoma Little League?s Reinfuss Field, the Lynn City Series will begin, with West Lynn American playing Lynn Shore at 5:30, followed by the Wyoma-East Lynn game at 7:30.Pine Hill drew the bye, and will play the winner of the West Lynn/Shore game Saturday (5:30).The series will take a break Sunday as the city?s top power hitters will duke it out in the Home Run Derby. The entire tournament is at Reinfuss Field, which is behind Walgreens right outside of Wyoma Square. The 14s finished as runners-up in last weekend?s state championship tournament, but were still invited to the New Englands, which will be held at Allen Field in Rochester, N.H., which is just outside of Portsmouth, off the Spaulding Turnpike. The girls were to get under way today (10) against New Hampshire/North, and they will play two games Friday as part of a pool play preliminary. At 9 a.m., they?ll go up against the host team in Rochester, and at 1 p.m. they will play Pittsfield, N.H., representing the southern part of the state.Their last game of pool play will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against the New Hampshire/South runner-up.There will be a semifinal in which the top two teams from each bracket will play each other Saturday. The final will be Sunday. The Lynn City Series will continue through next week with a double-elimination format. The final is scheduled for July 31 at 5:45 with a second game, if necessary, scheduled the next night at the same time.
