Former city councilor honored at bridge dedication

REVERE – A bridge over Revere Beach Parkway has been dedicated in honor of former Revere City Councilor Rita Singer.Singer was joined at the ceremony by her family, friends and Revere residents, all of whom expressed their appreciation for her dedicated efforts to improve the community.?My family and I are all incredibly proud of her,” her son, Bruce Singer, said at the event attended by officials from the Massachusetts of Department of Transportation, members of Revere?s State House delegation and area officials. “This is a well-deserved honor, she earned it, and we are thrilled this bridge is being dedicated in her name.”House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, who served as master of ceremonies for the event, said, “Rita Singer is a phenomenal individual and public servant. Her passion, dedication and love for her community have undoubtedly benefited every resident of Revere and have made an indelible mark on this great city.”?Rita was a relentless advocate for the people and city she represented throughout her many years serving on the Revere City Council,” said Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo. “Her passion and dedication made a huge difference in the lives of our residents, and I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Rita Singer.”In June, MassDOT completed construction work on the Revere Beach Parkway structure, which carries motorists over the MBTA Blue Line tracks near Beachmont Station.?MassDOT takes a lot of the pride in all our projects,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “It?s always a great thing to see them named after dedicated public servants like Rita Singer, who has clearly earned the respect of Revere?s residents through her work to strengthen this community.”?Rita paved the way for women in public office in the city of Revere,” said former state representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein, who served as sponsor of the bridge-naming legislation. “It?s exciting to honor this trailblazer and family friend. Her recognition is well-deserved.”?I am so proud that the bridge has been named in honor of Rita Singer,” state Rep. RoseLee Vincent said. “The work she accomplished during her tenure on the City Council improved the quality of life for the people of Ward 1 and the entire city. Rita Singer is a true model for the young women of Revere and anyone seeking elected office to help our community.”Rita Singer was one of Revere?s first elected female city councilors, serving from 1976 to 1993.She was a champion for the Beachmont community, initiating the construction of breakwater and seawalls for Roughan?s Point, improving transportation conditions for first responders and emergency vehicles and working tirelessly to aid and comfort victims in the aftermath of the blizzard of 1978.In addition to the many actions she took to improve Revere residents? quality of life as Ward 1 city councilor, she started the Revere Boys and Girls Club.?I want to thank my entire family who have supported me through everything and all the residents who trusted me to represent them,” Rita Singer said. “I never expected anything like this, it?s an honor I?ll never forget.”
