SAUGUS – Three people were taken to the hospital and a Saugus man faces drunken driving charges after the car they were riding in hit a car parked in a driveway on Main Street late Monday night.
Saugus Police said a 2012 Dodge Charger careened into the driveway at 36 Main St. near the intersection of Summer Street at 11:39 p.m., striking the home occupants’ vehicle and pushing it into a garage.
Although the Charger’s speed was not disclosed, Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said the driver, Jerry Lee Johnson, 18, of Saugus, was “traveling above the reasonable posted speed limit.”
The passengers were identified as Devin Jones, Patrick Wood, Mateo Mascone and Patrick Schroth, all 18, of Saugus. It was not immediately clear which of the car’s occupants were taken to the hospital, but their injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.
Giorgetti said Johnson was charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and speeding. Johnson will be arraigned on these charges in the Lynn District Court at a later date.
Of the five occupants in the vehicle, one was initially trapped inside and three were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Giorgetti added that National Grid was asked to respond to a minor gas leak and shut off electricity to the residence for the remainder of the night.
The collision also caused a minor water leak as well.
