Monday could be record night at Manning Field

August 8, 2014 by Rich Tenorio

Monday could be a record night at Manning Field when the women?s 1-hour run takes place. Race assistant Joe Abelon of Lynn says that one or more national records could fall.?There are several women who will be attending who are capable of breaking the American record in various age groups,” Abelon said. The meet begins at 6:15 p.m. There will be a men?s 1-hour run at 7:30 p.m. There is no entry fee for either event. Both events are part of the inaugural Summer Adult Track series at Manning Field.Abelon mentioned seven women, identifying Katie Misuraca of Gloucester as the favorite in the USA Track and Field-sanctioned event. Misuraca, who runs for the Boston Athletic Association, was the top female finisher (40th overall) in the recent Yankee Homecoming 10-miler in Newburyport.?Her pace of 6:00 is well under the 7:00 pace to establish a women only 1 hour run and is just what is needed to break the mixed gender record,” Abelon said. The women?s record for meters run on a track in an hour is 13,792, by Kay Capozzi, in St. Petersburg, Fla. on May 21, 1985.Other entrants in Monday?s race whom Abelon noted as having a chance at a record are:Aly Millett, a Greater Boston Track Club member with a mile pace of 5:45 in her personal-best 10K;Nicole Casey of Sutton, also a Greater Boston Track Club member, who had a mile pace of 6:05 in the New Bedford Half Marathon this year;Jennifer Rapaport of Melrose, who is vying to set a record in the age 50-54 category. The current record is 14,113, by Nicki Hobson in 1981. Rapaport is a former Olympic Trials qualifier who set a 6:23 pace in the James Joyce 10K at the USA National Masters Championships in Dedham this year.Regina Loiacano of Gloucester is looking to establish a record in the age 40-44 division. The current mark is 15,578, set by Linda Sipprelle in 1978. Loiacano is a graduate of Gloucester High and Endicott College. She is a member of Team Gloucester, a mountain and trail running team, and her coach is J.D. MacEachern. She set a 10-mile personal best this year with a 1:02.01 (6:12 pace).Layce Alves of Rockport and the Central Mass Striders finished 51st in the Yankee Homecoming 10-miler with a 6:11 pace. Her favorite quote is from Marblehead native and Boston Marathon elite runner Shalane Flanagan: “Don?t be afraid to dream of achieving the impossible!”That?s a good motto for everyone looking to set a record in this meet. We could see history made at Manning Field on Monday. Good luck to everyone participating!Like a fast-closing runner, the Lynn Woods Relay is approaching on the horizon. It will take place in less than two weeks, on Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. Sign up your 4-person team, with each member running a 2.5-mile leg. Proceeds benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Visit lwrun.org for more information.Perhaps it was appropriate that a half-moon shone over Lynn Beach on Monday. That?s because the latest edition of Marblehead resident James Green?s free running clinic included a session of half-mile runs along the beach. Flocks of small birds scuttled across the shoreline and the sand made a good running surface.Whether it?s the beach, the sidewalk, the trails or the track, I hope you?re having some enjoyable summer runs!
