DANVERS – To say that neither the Beverly Recs nor Peabody Champions are ready to go home for the summer is perhaps the biggest understatement of the 2014 North Shore Baseball League season. The two teams fought tooth and nail for 10-plus innings on Tuesday evening at Twi Field until the lights went out, leaving the conclusion of their semifinals series (tied 2-2) in the dark, literally. As it stands, Beverly leads 5-4 in the top of the tenth inning. When play resumes this evening (7:45 at Twi Field), the Recs will have two men on with two outs. Peabody will enter the bottom half of the frame with Chad Martin, Mike Giardi and Mark Crovo due up to bat.Just moments before the field was cast into darkness, the visitors regained the lead on an RBI single from Salem State-product Chris Cocci, scoring Joe Libby (single).A four-run sixth inning provided Beverly with its first lead and completely changed the prior momentum of the game.Libby provided the big strike, a three-run double to deep right field that chased starter John Guilmet, who had dazzled up until that point. The Peabody righty was staked to a 2-0 lead after four innings thanks to the bat of Giardi, who broke the ice with a double in the second (scoring Martin) before plating Mark Shorey with a single two frames later.Solo runs in the sixth and seventh gave the Champions new life.Dave Ruggiero singled and scored on an error to cut the deficit to one before scoring Kyle O?Neill with a single in the seventh.
