St. Mary?s lefty pitcher Clay Yianacopolus followed up a successful high school season with a busy and productive couple of months of summer ball.Yianacopolus plays for the U18 Boston Scorpions. Last month he earned all-tournament team status at the U18 Perfect Game National Championship held in Fort Myers, Florida. Yianacopolus earned the honor thanks to a one-hit shutout that featured 13 strikeouts.The Scorpions, comprised primarily of North Shore area players, went 5-1 in pool play. They made it to the “Sweet 16” before losing to the top-ranked East Cobb Astros from Georgia. Last weekend, the Scorpions reached the quarterfinals of the Diamond Nation tournament in New Jersey. Yianacopolus, who lives in Wakefield, pitches and plays first base and outfield. The Scorpion roster also includes a couple of St. John?s Prep players, Max Burt and Ted McNamara, and Peabody High?s Mike Raymond. Yianacopolus, who is entering his senior year, is also a captain of the St. Mary?s hockey team.
