Nahant Triathlon completes second-to-last week of season

NAHANT – There is just one week left in the Nahant Triathlon season. On Thursday, David Hensek won the second-to-last triathlon of the 34th season in a time of 38:39. He topped a field of 33.Triathlete Jeff Mononowski, who was injured last week after a moped cut him off during the bicycle portion, was there yesterday and was acknowledged by organizer Bob Levine.?He?s been there every week,” Levine said.Regarding his condition, Levine said, “He?s fine. Minor scratches, aches and pains. His shoulder?s a little sore. His lips are sore, his teeth hit the bottom of his lips.”Levine also said, “He?s got to get another bike.”Veteran Lynn runner Jerry Powers read about the accident in The Item and decided to volunteer at the triathlon this week.?I stopped traffic to make sure the bikes got through OK,” said Powers, who is training for the Bay State Marathon in Lowell. Yesterday, he also called off numbers and recorded names in a race book.?It was lucky nothing happened (in the accident),” Powers said.Jimmy Stafford also volunteered with giving numbers to triathletes.Lynn resident Keith Glass, a member of the Stone Tower Spahtens in Lynn Woods, is using the triathlon to train for a Spartan Race … a Team Death Race at the Spartan World Championships in Killington next month.?I?m new to this,” said Glass, who did his fourth Nahant Triathlon yesterday in his first season. “It?s great cross-training for cardio, legs, and shoulders.” Mimicking a hunched-over stance, he said, “I feel like this when I get out of the water.”He added: “It?s a real sport. Crawling through mud, there?s no athletic ability. These are athletes.”Glass trains with the Spahtens on Sundays at 6:30 a.m. at the Great Woods Road entrance to Lynn Woods.?We have a lot of toys,” he said. “We find logs across the trail, cut them up, carry and split them. Gianttires, unorthodox things, sandbags, bucket carries.”Yesterday?s schedule had none of these … but it did have a 450-foot swim in waist-high – and surprisingly warm — water, a 4.8-mile bike race and a 2.6-mile run to the Lynn Bathhouse and back.?Turnout was down a little bit,” Levine said. “Maybe it was the accident, maybe (talk of) rain, maybe it was too cool. There?s traffic – some are coming from the other side of Boston.” He also noted that kids are going back to school soon.Next week, the triathlon will conclude with its final edition and a pizza party, starting at 6:30 p.m.
