LYNN – A judge ordered a Gloucester man held without bail Tuesday after a woman told police the defendant tried to run her down with his car twice and hit her on his third attempt following an argument on the Lynnway.”Just the fact that it was three different assaults, it wasn’t just one,” Essex Assistant District Attorney Brendan Kelley said in Lynn District Court Monday, arguing the defendant be held for a dangerousness hearing. But defense attorney William Martin said the defendant had “a completely different version of what happened.”Corey Sherman, 33, of 9 Magnolia Ave., Gloucester, was arrested on a warrant charging him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and assault and battery. He was arraigned on the charges Tuesday in Lynn District Court where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. (Kelley said the Commonwealth may seek additional charges relating to the incident).Police reported responding at 9:45 p.m. Sunday to the area of Kelly Honda on the Lynnway where officers met the alleged victim and a witness. The alleged victim told police she and her friend Sherman were driving south on the Lynnway when they began arguing because Sherman wanted to drive to Revere Beach and she wanted to go home, Lynn Police Officer John Mackin wrote in a report. The alleged victim, who told police she thinks Sherman “wants more from the relationship,” said she got out of the car when Sherman stopped at a red light. But Sherman also got out and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to the ground, the woman told police, according to the report. The alleged victim told police she escaped and Sherman got back in his car, turned around and began driving at her, going the wrong direction on the Lynnway, police said. The alleged victim said she crossed the road to the northbound sidewalk and Sherman allegedly made a U-turn and tried to hit her again. The alleged victim said she started running and saw Sherman pull into the Kelly Honda lot and then start chasing her on foot, police reported. The alleged victim told police she realized she had left her cellphone in the car and ran back to the vehicle to call for help after noticing Sherman had left the door open when he had gotten out to chase her, police reported. But the car began to back up and she was hit by the open door, police said the alleged victim reported. A witness told police he saw the alleged victim hit by the car, and the witness subsequently went to help while Sherman drove off, police said.Kelley requested Sherman be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing at a later date. He said the commonwealth had not been able to contact the alleged victim and would summons her to court. But Martin said the defendant told him the car door hit the alleged victim by accident. Martin said Sherman and the alleged victim, who he said has a heroin problem and hence “her ability to recall what happened is highly suspect,” were fighting over a cellphone. The defendant said the alleged victim fell down during the physical struggle for the phone and was hanging onto the car door as he was trying to get away from her, Martin told the court.Martin said Sherman had no prior assaultive charges on his record and requested the defendant be released on personal recognizance.Judge James LaMothe said he found probable cause for a dangerousness hearing and ordered Sherman held without bail pending a hearing on Sept. 2.
