The Swampscott High field hockey team made new coach Jamie Spano?s debut a successful one by defeating Danvers, 1-0, Tuesday at Swampscott. The Big Blue (1-0) scored midway through the first period when Mackenzie Faulkner raced past the defense and got off a shot that found the back of the net. Swampscott returning goalie Katie Papele kept up her end of the deal, turning away all eight Danvers shots.?I?m really happy with how we played,” Spano said. “Everyone from the forwards to the defense played as a team.”Spano, who coached at Reading High School last year, inherited a team with quite a few returning players (8 juniors and 7 seniors). The Big Blue are home against Saugus on Thursday.Marblehead 2, Saugus 1At Saugus, Marblehead?s Hannah Fobert scored on a corner with no time remaining to give the Magicians the win. Marblehead had taken a 1-0 lead 6:50 into the game on a goal by Piper Newhall (Emily Mills assist). Saugus? Sophia Cogliano tied it up (Giana Dean assist). Annie Arthur had the assist on Fobert?s goal. The game marked the Sachems? return to the Northeastern Conference after spending a season in the Cape Ann League. Courtney Bua and Marina DeMild (6 kills each) also played well for the Tanners.Classical had strong performances from senior co-captains Ivy Martin (7 kills, 3 blocks, 11 service points) and setter Cassie D?Agostino (5 assists).?It was a really tight match,” Classical coach Frank DeLuca said, adding that Peabody is the defending Northeastern Conference champion. “I was very happy with our play.”GOLFSau. 40 1/2, Cla. 31 1/2At Cedar Glen Golf Course, the Sachems (1-0) picked up wins from Joe Ghika at No. 2, 7-2; Nick Dame at No. 3, 7-2; Ron Rahja, No. 4, 5 1/2-2 1/2, and Alex Guarino, No. 7, 7 1/2-1 1/2.Saugus missed qualifying for the state tournament by one match last year, but coach Jeff Mitchell is optimistic about this year?s prospects because most of his team is back.
