Golf: English one putt away against Peabody

The English golf team played a tremendous match against Peabody Wednesday night. Peabody?s Nick Jean won the last hole of his match at No. 8, which propelled Peabody to a 36 1/2-35 1/2 victory over English at Gannon Golf Course.Peabody (2-0) coach Peter Cronin was very impressed by English.?English played extremely well, and really took it to us on their home course,” Cronin said. “I?m happy we were able to come away with the win.”Peabody had two winners on the day in Steve Ferrante at No. 3 (5-4) and Tom Southern at No. 6 (7 1/2-1 1/2).English (3-0) had three winners on the day in No. 1 Matt Sencabaugh (5 1/2-3 1/2), No. 5 Chris Cole (6-3) and Matt Cole (6 1/2-2 1/2). English coach Tara Friedman was encouraged by her team?s performance.?This was a great match, but unfortunately we fell just short,” Friedman said. “The team has been improving, and hopefully we will be able to build off this match with winning results in the near future.”Arl. Leading the way for St. Mary?s was: Shawn MacBurnie (23 points); Richie McDonald (20 points); Chris McDonald (20 points); Nick Amenta (18 points) and Luke Smith (16 points).Salem 44, G?ster 27 1/2At Bass Rocks, the Witches (3-1) had wins from Kyle Doherty, 8-1, at No. 1; No. 3, Madison Ballou, 5 1/2-3 1/2; No. 6, Ben Welling, 5 1/2-3 1/2; No. 7, Josh Powers, 6-3, and No. 8, John Ballou, 8-1.St. John?s 230, Danvers 258At Beverly Golf and Tennis Club, St. John?s (2-1) was led by the brother duo of sophomore Mark Turner (35, even par) and junior captain James Turner (37). Senior Colin Natale chipped in with a 39 for the Eagles. Danvers? top performers were Eric Powers (38) and Christian McKenna (41).Pentucket 142, L?field 140At Haverhill, the Pioneers had a complete team effort in this close match. Leading the way for Lynnfield was: Nick Eliopoulos (27 points); Josh Greely (25 points); Mike Look (23 points) and Mike Waisnor (23 points). Lynnfield is now 2-1.S?scott 44, Classical 28At Kernwood Country Club, the Big Blue improved to 2-3, led by winners Anthony Springthorpe at No. 1, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Corey Bleau at No. 2, 5 1/2-3 1/2; E.J. Palleschi, No. 3, 5-4; Andrew Dove, No. 4, 7 1/2-1 1/2; Andrew Gavin, No. 5, 8-1, and Brandon Carola, No. 7, 5-4. Classical (0-4) had two winners on the day in freshman Travis Ryan, (No. 6, 5-4) and Jake Hickenbottom (No. 8, 5 1/2-3 1/2, first-ever varsity match).
