LYNN – She had an appointment for induced labor the next week. But instead of the help of doctors and nurses, Shaniece Ford returned from the hospital and delivered her baby with the help of Lynn’s finest.”Everything had gotten planned, but it just couldn’t wait,” proud new mother Ford said Monday. “They took him and me back to Salem Hospital, and they were just shocked to see me back, they said, ?Oh, my God, they just left an hour ago.'”Ford, 34, gave birth Friday to a baby boy who weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces, was 19 inches long, had all 10 toes and fingers, and “is healthy as can be,” Ford said. She named him Mason. But Mason didn’t arrive exactly as planned.Ford said she was scheduled to be induced Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital in the maternity ward for high-risk pregnancies. (Ford said her pregnancy was considered high-risk because she has high blood pressure.)She recalled waking up about every hour with pains last Wednesday but figured it was just constipation. She and her father went shopping for a car seat.Ford said she wasn’t too concerned until she was awoken again early Thursday morning with pains coming about every 30 minutes. She said she called Massachusetts General Hospital, where the on-call nurse said Ford shouldn’t come in until contractions were five to 10 minutes apart. At 3 a.m. Friday, Ford said the pain became so excruciating that she drove herself to Salem Hospital. Ford recalled being rushed up into the delivery department, where nurses said she was having contractions every five to 10 minutes – but her cervix was not open. They let her go home, Ford said. She called MGH again to ask that she be induced but was told they couldn’t induce labor before 38 weeks. The on-call nurse recommended rest and to mention the pains at a doctor’s appointment at 8:30 a.m. the next day.”Unfortunately, I couldn’t make that,” Ford said. “I couldn’t take the pains, all I could do was call 911, I said, ?my baby’s coming!”Police reported hearing Ford yelling in pain as they arrived at the apartment.”Ford went on to say that she was in her apartment alone and that she was in a lot of pain, adding that her ?water broke’ and that she felt she ?needed to push’ because she could ?feel the baby coming out,'” Lynn Police Officers Jennifer Almonte and Michael Economou reported. The baby’s head began to crown and “he just slid out, I didn’t even hear any crying,” Ford recalled. Meanwhile, fire and ambulance arrived on scene.”The police were so nice (and) the EMTs and fire department,” Ford recalled. “One of the guys from the fire department was the guy who cut the umbilical cord, and I could hear him saying, ?This is actually the third time I’ve done this.'”She and Mason were taken to Salem Hospital where she had been just about an hour earlier. This time she stayed for three days.Ironically, Ford said she was actually glad the labor hadn’t been induced.”When they first told me I was going to be induced, I thought ?you’re going to force pain on me?'” Ford recalled. “If I could go through three days and not even notice ’til at the time he came out or sit in a hospital bed and be forced into pain?”But, most importantly, she has a beautiful baby boy.”He’s so handsome, everybody’s like, oh, my God, that’s the most beautiful baby ever,” Ford said. “I’m like blessed right now.”
