NEWBURYPORT – Cell phones resembled shoes, email was not yet in vogue, the Berlin Wall still stood, and Ronald Reagan was the sitting President when Lynnfield last won a football game at World War Memorial Stadium in 1986.The Pioneers (2-0) finally put that streak to rest and spoiled the Clippers? season opener with a convincing 32-0 in Cape Ann League crossover action Friday night.?The kids wanted to be part of ending that streak. I wanted that,” said coach Neal Weidman after his club handled its second straight CAL Kinney opponent.Stifling defense and quick offensive strikes powered the Pioneers.Lynnfield disrupted Newburyport?s ground game, yielding 16 net rushing yards and producing nine negative yardage plays.Cam DeGeorge had three tackles for loss, including a sack; David Adams recovered two fumbles; Chad Martin contributed a sack; and Jon Knee and Kyle Hawes hauled in interceptions.?The defense played well. (Newburyport) really had a hard time running and that made them one-dimensional. We gave up a couple of drives, but when we needed to make a stop we did,” Weidman said.Junior Dan Bronshvayg?s 28-yard field goal capped Lynnfield?s first possession, finishing a 68-yard drive and giving Lynnfield the only points it would need with 5:35 left in the first quarter.?I hate field goals,” Weidman said, “but I felt we needed to get some points out of that.”Newburyport responded with a 65-yard drive behind quarterback Mike Shay (10-of-17, 117 yards), who found Jonathan Bajko three times for 54 yards. On 4th-and-goal at the 10, Shay scrambled right and was run out of bounds at the five by Kevin Lee.Then the Pioneers erupted.First, quarterback Dan Sullivan (7-of-10, 157 yards) delivered an 81-yard touchdown strike to Cam Rondeau. On the play, Sullivan and running back Jake Rourke rode a run fake until Newburyport?s defensive backs bit, Rondeau cleared behind the coverage, and Sullivan delivered.Bronshvayg?s PAT made it 10-0 with 6:28 left in the half.Newburyport turned it over at its 18 when Bajko?s knee touched while fielding a low punt snap.Five plays later Sullivan pounded in from four yards and Bronshvayg?s two-point flip to Max Robert off a designed fake made it 18-0.Adams? second fumble recovery with 1:24 left in the half set up Rourke?s 5-yard scoring rumble 20 seconds before halftime for a 25-0 lead.Lynnfield?s defense preserved the shutout, turning the ball over on downs on a 66-yard Newburyport possession in the third quarter.Junior quarterback Jake McHugh capped the scoring on a 10-yard run with 2:19 to play.
