Craig, Tyrrell, Millett lead Marblehead past Classical

September 13, 2014 by Matthew Roy

LYNN – Marblehead showed Friday night that it is far more than a one man band. With Classical geared up to shut down star running back Brooks Tyrrell, Magicians quarterback Spencer Craig and wide receiver Will Millett showed how dynamic the Marblehead offense can be.Craig completed 15-of-19 passes for 315 yards and 4 touchdowns while also rushing for 82 yards on 12 carries. Three of his touchdown passes went to Millett, who caught seven balls for 216 yards. Tyrrell also rushed for 114 yards and two scores as Marblehead outgunned the Rams, 48-27, at Manning Field.?Spencer really did a great job of throwing the ball,” Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff said. “And Brooks did a great job in the fourth quarter of going north and south and settling down the run game. And Will is just so tough to cover for a defender.”The Magicians (2-0) put the game out of reach with a four touchdown outburst in a little under nine minutes that spanned the end of the second and into the third quarters which turned a 13-13 tie into a 41-13 Marblehead lead with 3:25 left in the third.?That team is very good,” Classical coach Tim Phelps said. “But I give my kids credit. They hung in there and fought back when we got down 41-13.”The Rams (1-1) showed improvement on offense over week one against Gloucester as Eli McConney completed 12-of-24 passes while also rushing for 64 yards and a score.?The score got out of hand really quickly but you also saw how quick it came back because of how good Classical is,” Rudloff said. The Magicians jumped yo a 7-0 lead early in the first when Craig hit Mark Cohen for a 28 yard touchdown on Marblehead?s second snap of the game. It was still 7-0 early in the second when McConney fired a strike to Damien Earp for a six-yard touchown and a 7-7 tie after Micah Dublin?s PAT.The Craig-to-Millett connection then torched the Rams for an 84-yard TD down the middle on the next play to give Marblehead back the lead. Classical once again answered as Dublin capped a long drive with a four yard plunge to tie the game at 13 with 5:48 left in the half.Marblehead then put together a 12 play, 65-yard march that ate up nearly all the remaining time as Cohen?s three-yard dive with :50.4 left send the Magicians to the break with a 20-13 lead.Riding that momentum, Marblehead put the hammer down in the third as it needed a little over two minutes to drive 67 yards, capped by a 33-yard strike to Millett on a fake screen pass for a 27-13 lead.McConney was picked off on the second play of Classical?s first series of the second half and Marblehead didn?t waste much time in striking as Craig hit Millett for a 49-yard TD and a 21 point lead.Classical would turn the ball over again moments later and the Magicians delievered the knockout punch as Tyrrell capped a 35-yard march with a five yard run to make it 41-13. McConney would scramble 48 yards for a score late in the third before Devin Crayton paid off a 77 yard run on a fake punt by Chandler Laguerre with a two yard run to make it 41-27.Tyrrell closed the scoring with 2:28 left, plunging in from the one.
