Roundup: Saugus field hockey edges Marblehead

Sophia Cogliano put on a clinic Friday, scoring all three goals to lead the Saugus High field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Marblehead at Marblehead.Marblehead?s Hannah Fobert put the Magicians on the board with an unassisted goal, only to see Cogliano tied things up. Cogliano scored again to give the Sachems a 2-1, but the Magicians tied the game again on a goal by Kendall Casey (Annika Krug assist). Cogliano scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke with about a minute-and-a-half left in the game.Marblehead had strong play from Abby Dimare and Hadley Woodfin.Saugus is 2-3 and the Magicians are 3-1-1.VOLLEYBALLSt. Mary?s 3,St. Clement?s 0At Somerville, the Spartans (3-1) won 25-11, 25-19, 25-23, with Molly Doyle getting the job done passing and serving. Megan Geaney had four kills and three blocks.Mystic Valley 3, Marblehead 0At Mystic Valley, the Magicians lost their first match of the season despite strong play from Alexa Weislein (5 kills), Katie Pearce (14 assists) and Hannah Cohen (8 digs).BOYS SOCCERLynnfield 5, Amesbury 1At Amesbury, the Pioneers led 2-1 at the half on goals by Sam Huebschman. Kuba Jablonka scored for a 3-1 Lynnfield lead and Huebschman and Jablonka each added another goal for the 5-1 final.Fenwick 3, Lynn Tech 1At Peabody, the Crusaders (1-1) had goals from Shawn Carlson, Ken Mirra and Eric Flaherty while senior Matt Haley anchored the defense. Dominick Turelli scored in the second half for Tech to spoil the shutout.GIRLS SOCCERLynnfield 4, Amesbury 1At Lynnfield, Jess Duhaime broke the ice for the Pioneers (2-0-1) 13 seconds into the game (Liz Reed assisted). The Pioneers went on to scored three more times with Abby Weaver finding the net at the 31st minute (Duhaime assist). Duhaime scored her second goal of the afternoon 10 seconds into the second half and Reed applied the finishing touch with a goal at the 61st minute. Amesbury spoiled the shutout with seven minutes left in the game.Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont was pleased with the defensive play of Abby Patras, Meryl Braconnier, Christa Roman and Sydney Santosuosso. Goalie Kristin Buzzotta had a highlight reel save at the end of the game. Reed had two assists and Emily Scollard and Paige MacEachern each had an assist.FOOTBALLSt. John?s 14, Brockton 6At Brockton, the Eagles stopped Brockton on the seven-yard line with no time remaining to pull out a dramatic win. Cody Harwood put St. John?s up 6-0 on a touchdown run from inside the 15 with Justin Foley kicking the extra point.The Eagles took a 7-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime and that?s how things scored until the fourth quarter when Brockton scored. The Boxers missed the extra point, making it 7-6. St. John?s Prep found itself buried deep in its own end (inside the 10) to start what would be a 90-yard drive that ended on an Ollie Eberth five-yard touchdown pass to Jake Burt. Jack Lambert had several big carries in that drive including two on fourth down to keep it alive.The Boxers marched down the field with one minute remaining and got the ball to the seven before the time ran out.?They (Brockton) played really good defense,” St. John?s Prep coach Brian St. Pierre said. “They?re very big and athletic. I thought our defense played great.”The two teams have met every year since 1991. The series is fairly close, although the Eagles have now won four straight.Gloucester 45, Salem 20At Salem, Jenrri Rosario ran for 56 yards for Salem on eight carries, including an 11-yard touchdown run.Javier Robles scored on a 10-yard touchdown run, and caught an 18-yard TD pass from quarterback Jarell Nunez.Nunez also rushed for a two-yard conversion. Victor Claudio have seven tackles and assisted on two.
