Volleyball: Marblehead outlasts Classical in battle

It was a war, but the Marblehead High volleyball team survived with a 3-2 win over Classical Wednesday at Lynn.The undefeated Magicians took the first set, 25-21, only to see the Rams storm back and win the next two, 25-16, 25-12. Marblehead pulled out a thriller in the fourth set, 25-23, and took the rubber match, 15-12.Maeve Daley (12 kills, 9 digs, 3 aces); Samantha Payne (10 kills, 3 blocks); Emily Promise (15 assists, 3 aces) and Julia Marsden (2 kills, 2 aces, 8 digs) all came up big in the win.The Rams missed some serves in the first set and that proved costly, but Meredith MacDonald?s six consecutive service points in the second set helped turn things around. Cassidy McGann had five consecutive service points to help the Rams take the third set. Ivy Martin almost pulled out the win for Classical (4-2) in the final set when she brought the Rams back from a deficit with some excellent serving.Danvers 3, English 0At Danvers, the Falcons won 25-9, 25-9, 25-6. Jennifer Benavides played well at outside hitter for the Bulldogs (0-6).Peabody 3, Winthrop 0At Winthrop, the Tanners (5-0) won 25-14, 25-22, 25-12. Emily Diezemann (5 kills, 1 block); Marina DeMild (4 kills, 2 blocks); Sara Hosman (3 aces, 2 kills) and Courtney Bua (16 service points, 2 kills) played well in the win.Lynnfield 3, Masco 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (3-0) dominated Masco from start to finish (25-13, 25-8, 25-2). Lynnfield was led by senior Emma Mancini (13 kills, 5 digs), sophomore Katie Nugent (9 kills); junior Shannon Ryan (17 assists); junior Jess Dwyer (13 digs) and sophomore Sarah Mezini (7 aces).Bishop Fenwick 3, Arlington Catholic 1At Bishop Fenwick, the Crusaders (4-1) won 26-24, 27-25, 22-25, 25-17.?It was a battle,” Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis said, adding that every time the two teams meet every game is intense. Fenwick defeated Arlington Catholic in the North semifinals of the state tournament last year.Sisters Madison and Molly Camelo played well, combining for 14 kills and eight blocks. Sam Lipka had 14 digs and Lindsay Donahue, six kills and 14 digs.Beverly 3, Swampscott 1At Swampscott, the Panthers won 24-26, 25-22, 25-20, 25-17. Big Blue captain and outside hitter Gina Asipenko had four aces and nine kills, co-captain and opposite hitter Juliette Albo had two aces and three kills and setter Leanne Nisbet had 20 assists.
