September 20, 2014 by Brendan Tyman

MALDEN – Untimely penalties and an interception led to Revere’s first defeat of the season at MacDonald Stadium on Friday night – a 14-7 loss to Malden.Malden cornerback Skip Langton had a dazzling 80-yard interception return for a touchdown at the end of the first half. Langton caught the ball towards the Malden sideline on the right side of the field and turned to the left side. When Langton got near midfield, he reversed direction and was able to break several tackles before he crossed the goal line.”(Malden’s) got athletes,” said Revere head coach Lou Cicatelli. “They had the capability to make big plays.””It was a 7-7 game so they were trying to get something going offensively into halftime,” said Malden head coach Joe Papagello. “Fortunately, we have a handful of good athletes and Skip is a dynamite player.”Revere totaled 65 yards in penalties. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Kaleb Silva appeared to run for a 63-yard touchdown, but the officials called the play back on a clipping penalty. The ball came back to Revere’s own 23-yard line and the Patriots (1-1) eventually turned the ball over on downs when they were unable to convert a 4th-and-7 play.”It’s tough to call a chop block inside the tackle box,” said Cicatelli. “That’s a tough penalty to take.”The Patriots had opportunities to jump ahead early in the game, but they were unable to take advantage of good field position. After Revere downed a punt inside the Malden 5-yard line, the Patriots started their next possession on the Malden 43. Revere’s offense was forced to kick the ball back to the Golden Tornadoes (3-0) after a three-and-out. Revere had other possessions stall with four false starts.Revere also lost despite edging Malden in the turnover category, 2-1. The Patriots’ defense had a pick late in the first half and recovered a fumble in the third quarter, but they were unable to score.Revere got on the scoreboard first on a 9-yard run by Silva (128 rushing yards) early in the second quarter. The drive was aided by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty by Malden for a late hit out of bounds after a third-down run by Revere quarterback Dan Murphy. The ball was placed in the red zone.Revere failed an onside kick attempt and Malden recovered the ball at Revere’s 47-yard line. Malden running back Danley Exilhomme (109 rushing yards) took a handoff to the left side of the field for a 41-yard gain. Three plays later, Marvens Fedna tied the score at 7 when he received the ball on an end-around for a 6-yard touchdown jaunt.”We came up short,” said Cicatelli. “We have Winthrop coming up next week, but we have to work harder.”
