Soccer: Swampscott boys pull away from English in second half

The Swampscott High boys soccer team took a while to get going, but a strong second half lifted the Big Blue to a 3-0 win over English at Swampscott.Ray Rosa scored on a cross from the corner delivered by Matt Carbone at the 60-minute mard. The Big Blue added two more goals in the final 10 minutes, the first from Danny Highston at the 72nd minute and the second from Mike Coffey two minutes later.Swampscott plays Salem Tuesday.Peabody 2, Marblehead 0At Marblehead, the Tanners (4-1-1) scored in the first half, when Ben Manoogian made good on a penalty kick. Joao Correia provided an insurance goal for Peabody, when he scored on a header right in front of the net that was set up by Manooigan. Peabody plays Gloucester Tuesday.St. John’s 4, Mullin 0At Danvers, the Eagles (4-0-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, and never looked back. Leading the way for St. John’s was the senior duo of Patrick Foley (1 goal, 2 assists) and Pete McManus (1 goal). Paul Magazzu and Vlad Blayaakhman chipped in with one goal apiece for the Eagles. St. John’s plays Xaverian today.Mullen was visiting from Denver, Colo.Revere 7, Saugus 0At Saugus, the Sachems (3-2) were without three senior starters, and could not overcome the injury bug.”Missing three senior starters is tough enough, and getting off to a slow start just demoralized us as a team,” Saugus coach Dan D’Amico said. “Hopefully this will be a good learning experience, and we are able to turn a negative into a positive.”Kurt Martin had a strong showing in goal for the Sachems. For Revere (5-2), Matt Diaz had a monster performance with four goals. Gerald Limus (2 goals) and Angel Gilbert (1 goal) finished up the scoring for the Patriots. Revere plays Danvers Tuesday.Salem 4, Gloucester 1At Gloucester, the Witches (2-4) had a slim 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, but took complete control in the second half. Leading the way for Salem was Nathan Russell (2 goals). Simon Brats and Brandon Mustufaraj scored one goal each for the Witches. Salem plays Swampscott Tuesday.Malden Cath. 2, Fenwick 1At Malden Catholic, the Lancers led 1-0 at the half and 2-0 with about 10 minutes left in the game. Fenwick could only muster one goal, but it was a good one. James Brody noticed that the Lancer goalie was pretty far out of the net on the kick-off after his team’s second goal. Brody got a foot on the ball and sailed it over the goalie into the net.Fenwick (2-2) had strong play from Jimmy Moore in the midfield and Matt Haley and Connor Alexander on defense.GIRLS SOCCERWinthrop 3, Classical 1At Winthrop, the Rams (3-3-2) were down 1-0 at the end of the first half. Classical tied the game 10 minutes into the second half, when Emily Bucklin kicked it by the Winthrop goalie, assisted by Paige Barnard. The Vikings answered with back-to-back goals 15 minutes later. Jen Ierardi had a solid performance for the Rams. Classical plays Beverly Thursday.Swampscott 7, English 0At Manning Field, the Big Blue (5-2-1) had no problem sharing the wealth, as seven different players found the back of the net. Swampscott goal scorers were: Maggie DiGrande, Megan Hartman, Jayme Caponigro, Nikki Rose, Ellie Wright, Fatima Dogh and Emma Wight. Swampscott plays Salem Tuesday.Whittier 5, Tech 0At Whittier, the Tigers (0-1-6) had a strong performance despite the score”The game was 1-0 for the first 60 minutes, and we just ran out of gas,” Tech coach Jeremy McKeen said. “We played a really strong defensive game, despite having to deal with a number of injuries.”Priscila Imul, Coral Gonzalez and Lilanette Nieves set the tone for the Tech defense. Tech plays Greater Lawrence Tuesday.Salem 2, Gloucester 0At Bertram Field, Tayla O’Leary scored one goal in each half for Salem (4-2-0). Sydney Rocheville and Julia Donahue picked up an assist each on the O’Leary goals. Arianna Gaffney recorded her second shutout of the season (4 saves). Senior captain Katherine Towey and junior captain Hayley Jellison anchored a stingy Salem defense.Danvers 3, B
