Roundup: Marblehead field hockey hangs on for win

The Marblehead High field hockey team struck early and hung on in a 2-1 win over Danvers Monday at Marblehead.The Magicians (5-1-2) took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game on a Hannah Fobert goal (Hadley Woodfin assist) and Annika Krug scored what would be the game-winner off a corner from Fobert with six minutes left in the first half. Danvers made things interesting when it scored off a corner with about 10 minutes left in the game, but the Magician defense shut the door.?It was a very fast, back-and-forth game with a lot of big defensive stands,” Marblehead coach Linda Collins said. “The forwards on both sides were flying trying to set up.”Marblehead goalie Cassidy Alla felt the heat when Danvers put some pressure on late in the game, but she hung tough for the win.Saugus 0, Beverly 0At Saugus, this one was a defensive battle. The Sachems kept the Panthers at bay with strong play from defenders Shannon Gayron, Julia Daley, Tayla Giufrida and Madison Caron. Carolyn Wilk was in net for Saugus (3-3-2).Gloucester 2, Peabody 0At Gloucester, the Fishermen scored early in the first half and late in the second half to put the game away. The Tanners (1-3-3) had strong play from Lindsey Grayson at center back and Haley Riley at left back. Allison Daly made five saves in the first 15 minutes of the game. She and Catherine McGrath split the game in net.Swampscott 5, Revere 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue (5-0-2) got the job done thanks to Annie Kane, who had two goals, and Mackenzie Faulkner, Sydney Faulkner and Aliyah Marberblatt, who contributed one each. Swampscott led 3-0 at the half. Katie Papele (2 saves) picked up the shutout.GOLFSt. Mary?s 141, Medford 86At Gannon Golf Course, the Spartans were led by the trio of Nick Amenta, Chris McDonald and Emmitt O?Shea, who contributed 23 points apiece. Shawn MacBurnie and Brendan O?Neill finished with 21 points for St. Mary?s (5-2). Saugus 37 1/2, Sal. 34 1/2At Cedar Glen, sophomore Eric Guarino clinched the Sachems? win with a 7 1/2-1 1/2 victory. Other victors for Saugus (5-2) included Jay Lever (7-2) and Nick Moore (5 1/2-3 1/2).Cam Toomey (5 1/2-3 1/2), Madison Ballou (7-2) and Josh Powers (6 1/2-2 1/2 ) were all victorious for the Witches.Salem 43 1/2, Rev. 28 1/2At Cedar Glen, the Witches earned a split behind a cast of victories, including those from Cam Toomey (5-4) and Madison Ballou (6 1/2-2 1/2), who each won twice on the day.Kyle Doherty (5-4), Cam Fraser (6 1/2-2 1/2), John Ballou (6-3) and Derek Zwiercan (5 1/2-3 1/2) added victories for Salem.VOLLEYBALLWilliams 3, St. Mary?s 1At Tony Conigliaro Gym, Archbishop Williams won 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20. St. Mary?s went up early in the first set, but the Bishops? server got on a roll and the momentum shifted. Jess Martiniello had 15 service points for the Spartans (3-3) and overall a great game in the back row. Amanda Idusuyi was a force at the net with six kills and two blocks.Fenwick 3, Austin Prep 0At Reading, the Crusaders got five kills and four blocks apiece from sisters Madison and Molly Camelo in its straight-set victory (25-8, 25-18, 25-16).Melissa MacKenzie also finished with five kills for Fenwick (6-1).Peabody 3, Beverly 1At Beverly, the Tanners (7-0) got a four-set victory over the Panthers, who stole the second session 25-17. Peabody opened the match with a 25-9 win before responding to the equalizer with triumphs of 25-19 and 25-11.Sophomore Hannah Kemp (19 serve points, 12 assists) and senior Emily Diezemann (8 kills) led the Tanners.N. Andover 3, Lynnfield 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (3-1) lost in straight sets (16-25, 18-25, 21-25), their first defeat of the season.CROSS COUNTRYSwampscott 16, English 49At Lynn Woods, the Big Blue took the top four spots with Ryan Magrane in first (21:13), followed by Oliver Daniels-Koch (21:19); Robert McLaughlin (21:25) and Andrew Richardson (21:30).
