Boys Soccer: Saugus has final say over Classical

Steve Krause

September 24, 2014 by Steve Krause

The Saugus boys soccer team survived a back-and-forth battle with visiting Lynn Classical Tuesday afternoon, winning 4-3 when Guilherme Barbosa scored his second goal of the day with seven minutes left.?We had three starters back who were out last week, and that made a huge difference,” Saugus coach Dan D?Amico said.Classical took a 1-0 lead when Abitalib Girdia scored, but Saugus got the next two — one on a penalty kick by Barbosa and another on Jorge Chiquillo?s first of two goals. However, Keregeya Nasibu got the equalizer before the half ended, sending the teams into the locker rooms tied at 2-2.Chiquillo put Saugus ahead 3-2 before Dominique Panmo retied it for Classical. But Ryan Furbush put a picture-perfect through ball onto Barbosa?s foot, and he one-timed it home for the score.?This is a huge win for us,” said D?Amico. “Classical really put on a big push after that.”So big, in fact, that the Rams were poised to put home the equalizer, with a striker all alone in front of the net, when time expired.?The referee blew the whistle,” said Classical coach Rob Upton. “But it didn?t come down to that. We missed opportunities all afternoon. We connect on any of them, and it?s a different game. Give Saugus credit, though. They played well.”Saugus raises its record to 4-2 while Classical falls to 5-2.Salem 2, Swampscott 0At Bertram Field, the Witches (3-4) won their third game in a row, with Nathan Russell scoring both goals, one in the first half and the other in the final 40 minutes.Alejandro Smart assisted on one goal with a length-of-field pass to Russell. Freshman Nick Capra made six saves. The Witches are at home Friday against St. Mary?s.For Swampscott, center-midfielder Jake Dennehy had a solid game. The Big Blue are home Tuesday against Classical.Peabody 6, Gloucester 2At Gloucester, six different players scored for the 5-1-1 Tanners, with Vagelli Andrias assisting on two of them.First-half goals came from Lucas Amaral, Bobby Caproni and Connor Wolff, while Ben Manoogian, Christian Morales and Joao Correia scored in the second period.Kevin Lebell and Fagner Coehlo split the game in net.?I thought we controlled things pretty much the whole game,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen, adding that defender Nick Bettencourt and midfielder Ken Sawyer played well.Revere 2, Danvers 0At Danvers, the Patriots ran their record to 6-2 with goals from Mattheus Valho, who came in from the right side and shot it into the net; and Gilbert Torres, who came in from the left side.Jesus Landeverde played well in net.
