Golf: Spartan golf snaps A.C. winning streak

The St. Mary?s golf team ruined Arlington Catholic?s day and its 50-match win streak that dates back four years with a 162-161 win Tuesday at Gannon Golf Course.The match came down to the final group, Spartan coach Jay Fiste said, and it was Brendan O?Neill and Luke Smith giving St. Mary?s the one-point victory.?They hit some clutch chips,” Fiste said, noting that they both chipped in for birdie on separate holes.?Everybody?s excited now. Captain James Turner shot par 36; Mark Turner and Jake Ewing each shot 39 and Tommy Cothern of Swampscott shot a 40.Swampscott 45 1/2, Gloucester 26 1/2At Tedesco Country Club, the Big Blue (3-6) won the first three matches led by Anthony Springthorpe, 6 1/2-2 1/2; Corey Bleau, 6-3 and Andrew Dove, 6-3. E.J. Palleschi tied at No. 4 and Swampscott won the next three, with Brandon Carola, 6 1/2-2 1/2; Adam Dishman, 7-2, and Patrick Bartholomew, 6 1/2-2 1/2.Beverly 50, English 22At Beverly Golf & Tennis, English sophomore Chris Cole defeated Colin MacDonald, 6-3, in the four spot for the Bulldogs? (2-6) only win.Marblehead 37, Danvers 35At Ferncroft Country Club, the Magicians (4-3, 4-1 Northeastern Conference) edged out the Falcons with strong play from Owen Picariello and Jake Kramer, who each shot a two-over par 38 and Jake Hemple, 39.Peabody 37 1/2, Salem 34 1/2At Olde Salem Greens, the Tanners (6-1) survived a scare with wins from Steve Ferrante at No. 2, 6 1/2-2 1/2 and Ted Izzo at three, 7-2. Peabody also had wins from Tom Southern, 6 1/2-2 1/2 and Zach Bille, 6 1/2-2 1/2.Salem?s wins came from Kyle Doherty at No. 1, 5 1/2-3 1/2; Cam Fraser at No. 4, 6-3; Madison Ballou at No. 5, 7-2, and John Ballou at No. 7, 6 1/2-2 1/2. The Tanners are 6-1 and Salem is 5-6.
