Soccer: Chavez leads St. Mary’s boys past Fenwick

The St. Mary?s boys soccer team was in a tight game early on against Fenwick Wednesday night, but Cristian Chavez hat trick propelled the Spartans pull away easily from the Crusaders, 6-1 at Fenwick.
St. Mary?s coach Mike D?Agostino was impressed by his team?s performance especially Chavez.
?This was a huge win for us,” D?Agostino said. “The offense was solid, and Christian really dominated the play today, and was easily the best player on the field.”
St. Mary?s had a slim 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, but outscored Fenwick 4-0 in the second half. Chavez (3 goals, 2 assists) and Noah Camelo (2 goals and 2 assists) accounted for the entire goal scoring in the second half. Dan Montoya, Kevin Esper, and Erick Whitcomb had strong performances for the Spartans. St. Mary?s has now won six games in a row, and will look to extend its winning streak Friday against Salem.
Lynnfield 1, Pentucket 1
At Lynnfield, the Pioneers found themselves in a hole early, but junior Kuba Jablonka tied chipped it in off a through ball by Matt Seelig just before the half. Nick Colucci capped a strong game in net with a big save late in the game to preserve the tie. Center back Tom Kearney anchored the defense. The Pioneers are 3-3-2 with Masconomet up next.
Chelsea 3, Tech 0
At Chelsea, the Tigers (1-5-2) were in a scoreless tie until the 10-minute mark of the first half, as Chelsea scored three goals in three minutes. Erick Imul had a strong showing at midfield and sweeper. Tech plays at Greater Lowell Friday.
St. John?s 1, Catholic Memorial 0
At West Roxbury, the Eagles (7-0-1, 3-0-1 Catholic Conference) scored winning goal early in the second half when senior striker Pat Foley put away his seventh of the season with the assist going to Paul Magazzu. Zach Rowell (1 save) picked up his sixth and the team?s sixth shut out. Center back Stephen Heintz also had a strong game.
?It?s aways tough there,” St. John?s Prep coach Dave Crowell said. “It?s a night game. They?re always fired up. Any win on the road in the conferene, we?ll take.”
Foxborough Reg. 2, KIPP 1
At Manning Field, the Panthers (3-1-2) lost their first home game.Junior Charlie Huffman scored again, increasing his league-leading goal output to eight. Assisting him was freshman Josue Canales.
KIPP returns to action on Sunday against Match Charter Public School in Cambridge.
GIRLS SOCCER
Lynnfield 5, Pentucket 0
At Pentucket, the Pioneers (5-0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the game when Paige MacEachern took a cross from Liz Reed and with her left foot drilled it far post. Five minutes later Emily Scollard scored on a shot from about 18 yards out that the goalie had no chance on. Liz Shaievitz made it 3-0 five minutes later when she went far post. Paig MacEachern and Killey Nevils had the double assist.
The second half saw Jess Duhaime put in her own rebound after getting a cross from Lexi Yannone. Abby Weaver (Emily Lucich, Renee DelNegro) scored the final goal.
The Pioneers had keeper Hannah Travers back between the posts. Travers had been on the sidelines since the start of a the season with a leg injury. She made seven saves in the first half (10 total) for the shutout.
?I thought defensively we played really well,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “Pentucket?s a good team. They have good speed.”
Peabody 2, Marblehead 1
At Marblehead, Emily Nelson scored to put the Tanners up 1-0 early in the first half with Katherin Scacchi getting the assist. Marblehead freshman Alexis Bostley tied the game up with 15 minutes left in the first half, but Peabody?s Caroline Colbert popped in the winner with about 20 minutes left in the game (Molly Tansey assist).
Marblehead coach Andy Bub said he team put some pressure on down the stretch and had a couple of opportunities, but nothing found the back of the net. Lauren Unterborn (15 saves) was in net for the Magicians ( 5-1-2).
