Tyrrell, Marblehead run past Swampscott

September 27, 2014 by Matt Fraser

MARBLEHEAD — For the first time in its long history, the football rivalry between Marblehead and Swampscott took place under the lights on a Friday evening at Piper Field. As it turns out, Magicians running back Brooks Tyrrell enjoys that kind of prime-time feel, rushing for 252 yards and seven touchdowns in a 56-35 victory over the Big Blue.”He’s pretty good I guess,” joked coach Jim Rudloff who has become rather accustomed to the senior’s impressive game-breaking ability.”We obviously enjoy getting the ball to Brooks and tonight he happened to be the answer for everything. I honestly can’t say enough about him.”MARBLEHEAD – To their credit, the visitors played right with the Marblehead’s high-octane offense throughout the first half, scoring 21 points before going into the half down by just seven.”Swampscott should be commended for the job they did in the first half,” lauded Rudloff. “They came out and pounded the ball down our throats. Their defense decided to take our passing game away, much like Danvers in Week 1 but we fortunately had enough weapons to throw back at them.”A 26-yard yard touchdown pass from Big Blue quarterback Devin Conroy (to Joey Faia) was sandwiched in between a 10-yard rushing score from counterpart Spencer Craig and Tyrrell’s first six-points on the night, a 22-yard burst at the 2:32 mark.Michael Faia scored 65 seconds into the second quarter on a 56-yard catch and run before Tyrrell answered from 16-yards out at 7:33.The visitors fired right back with a 66-yard gain from Michael Faia, setting up the pre-equalizer, a six-yard keeper from Conroy.Tyrrell would add another touchdown from 19-yards out on the host’s go-to-play, an option pitch that he took to the left pylon with 2:40 remaining.”One of the things that makes Spencer such a good quarterback is willingness to take a hit in order to pitch the ball to Brooks. He’s basically a signal-calling fullback who opens up a whole lot of options for our offense.”Craig finished 7 of 11 for 146 yards with one interception.Marblehead needed just three offensive plays to take over in the second half as Tyrrell scored on a 54-yard romp immediately following a Big Blue punt and then again 3:17 later from the visitors-32.Fourth quarter scores from 21 and 59 by Tyrrell countered a pair of Conroy runs, the former from 14-yards out and the latter from the four with two seconds remaining.
