Girls Soccer: English falls just short in loss to Winthrop

It was close but no cigar for the English High girls soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Winthrop Thursday at Manning Field.The Bulldogs hung tough most of the way and actually led 1-0 at the half. The Vikings scored two goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to ice the win. English?s goal came from Emma Trahant, who headed in a ball from Alexa Zayas.?It was a beautiful goal,” English coach Ed McNeil said. “We had a great first half, but Winthrop dominated in the second half. Our defense played very well.”Kaitlyn Nadeau (15 saves) had a very good game in net for the Bulldogs (1-8-2).Peabody 5, Saugus 0At Peabody, the Tanners (9-1-0, 9-0-0 Northeastern Conference) qualified for the Division 1 state tournament. Chloe Cizzi led the attack with two goals. Bryanna Gaynor, Caroline Colbert and Emily Nelson had one each and Katrina Silva, Katherine Scacchi, Macayla Lachance and Sarah Godschall anchored the defense.Danvers 2, Salem 0At Bertram Field, Danvers took a 1-0 lead on Morgan Mscisz? goal late in the first half off a corner kick (scramble in front of the net) and added one more for good measure, from Meghan McCarriston. Arianna Gaffney (9 saves) was strong in net for Salem and Haley Jellis did a good job at sweeper. The Witches are 6-4, 5-4 Northeastern Conference.Lynnfield 2, Ham-Wen 1At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (6-1-2) picked up their first win on their new turf field. Kelly Look headed in a corner kick by Liz Reed 18 minutes in to give Lynnfield a 1-0 lead. The Generals put in a rebound early in the second half, but Lynnfield nailed down the win on a goal by Emily Lucich (Jess Duhaim and Reed assists). Hannah Travers (7 saves) picked up the win.Marblehead 2, Beverly 1At Marblehead, the Magicians (7-1-2) scored a goal in each half, as Olivia Eddy scored in the first, and Meghan McCarthy in the second. Lauren Unterborn had a terrific performance in net for Marblehead (14 saves). Marblehead led 2-0 until the final 12 minutes when Beverly?s Megan Vien scored on a ball from Rose Terner. The Panthers are 6-4-1.
