Golf: Classical squeaks by Salem; Spartans win

The Classical golf team built an early lead against Salem Thursday night, which proved to be the difference in the match, as the Rams squeaked by the Witches 37-35 at Gannon Golf Course.?This was a hard-fought match that could have gone either way, and it was nice that it went our way,” Classical coach Jack Morrison said.Freshman Travis Ryan had a clutch win for Classical (3-9-1) at No. 6 (6 1/2- 2 1/2). The rest of the Classical winners were: Mark Brazell, No. 1 (6-3); Sean Dean, No. 4 (5-4); and Steve Patrie, No. 7 (5 1/2-3 1/2). Salem?s winners were: Cam Twomey, No. 2 (5 1/2- 3 1/2); Madison Ballou, No. 3 (5 1/2-3 1/2); Wes Schaejbe, No. 5 (7-2) and John Ballou, No. 8 (5-4). Salem is 7-7.St. Mary?s 175, Bishop Fenwick 167At The Meadow, the Spartans (10-2) rode strong performances by Shawn MacBurnie (34 points) and Andrew Kreamer and Brendan O?Neil, 30 points each.?It was a very tight match until the last group (including O?Neil) came in,” St. Mary?s coach Jay Fiste said.Chris McDonald (22 points); Richie McDonald (21 points); Ryan Borders (20 points) and Max Emmerich (18) rounded out the scoring for the Spartans.Fenwick (1-5) had strong play from captains John Bucchieri (23 points) and Andrew Hosman (22 points), and Greg McGunigle (24 points).Marblehead 51 1/2, Saugus 20 1/2At Tedesco Country Club, Marblehead?s Owen Picariello shot a 1-over 35 and teammate Jake Hempel finished with a 3-over 37. Both won their matches as did Jake Kramer, Josh Tassinari, Bryan Cohn, George Goetz and Will Thompson. The Sachems? (7-5) win came from Nick Moore, 6-3, at No. 5. The Magicians are 5-1 in the Northeastern Conference.Lynnfield 157, Georgetown 102At Sagamore Golf Course, the Pioneers (5-3) were led by Nick Eliopoulos (32 points); Mike Waisnor (29 points); Paul Pasciuto (25 points), and Brent Donovan and Josh Greeley, 24 points each. John Persoskie had 23 points.Beverly 49, Peabody 23At Beverly Golf & Tennis, Peabody?s Ted Izzo halved his match at No. 3 and Zach Bille won at No. 8, 5-4. The Tanners are 6-2.St. John?s 226, Central Catholic 239At Kernwood CC, the Eagles (9-1-1) were led by the sophomore duo of Mark Turner (1 under, 34) and Griffin Chenard (37). Swampscott native Tommy Cothern chipped in with a 38 for the Eagles.
