Roundup: Lynnfield girls soccer prevails; Spartans XC visits Vermont

It seemed like everything was going against the Lynnfield girls soccer team on Saturday at Hyland Field in Manchester as the Pioneers battled the elements and an 0-9 Hornets team that was playing with plenty of vigor.Fighting off a driving rain and an early deficit to take a 2-1 halftime lead, Lynnfield saw the hosts fight back midway through the second to tie the game. That?s when senior Paige MacEachern jumped on a loose ball following an Emily Scollard free kick to give the Pioneers a 3-2 victory over the Hornets.?We were able to respond quickly after they scored and that was one of the positives from this game,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “We didn?t play like we wanted to and that?s a credit to Manchester. But we got the two points.”The Hornets took a 1-0 lead early before MacEachern tied the game in the 25th minute when she headed in a Liz Reed corner. Less than a minute later, Reed flicked a pass ahead to Scollard for a breakaway and a 2-1 Lynnfield lead.Manchester rallied again to tie the game in the 63rd minute before MacEachern scored :24 later for the win.St. Mary?s 3, Austin Prep 0At Manning Field, Kayla Deschenes had a goal and two assists as the Spartans (7-3-2, 4-2-2 CCL Large) moved within two points of a tournament berth. Marnelle Garraud scored in the first half before Taylor Capozzi and Deschenes added second-half goals.St. Mary?s can clinch a tournament berth at home on Wednesday when it takes on Innovation.North Andover 2, Peabody 2At Donahue Field in Peabody, the Tanners (9-1-1) clawed back and tied the game midway through the second half on Katrina Silva?s goal. Chloe Gizzi had a first-half tally for the Tanners.Rebecca Sabino had nine saves in net for Peabody. Rachel Margossian had two stops in relief.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYAt the Woods Trail Run in Vermont, the St. Mary?s girls placed 32nd overall as a team but Tia Foglietta took home first place in the Division 2 race with a time of 21:33. Also placing for the Spartans were sophomore Elizabeth Weise with a fourth place in the Division 3 race and freshman Kimberly Le thanks to a third in the Division 5 race.Marblehead at Bay State InvitationalAt Franklin Park in Boston, the Magicians? Grace Maguire finished 23rd overall (20:33.71) in the Steve Sawyer Race.BOYS CROSS COUNTRYAt the Bay State Invitational at Franklin Park in Boston, Marblehead finished sixth as a team in the Kevin Mahoney race. Top finisher for the Magicians was Jared Kokinos, who was 15th overall (17:18.35). Elrik Larson was next best for Marblehead in 24th place (17:33.79).St. John?s Prep finished fifth as a team in the Kevin Black race. Leading the Eagles was Josh Rapoza with a 12th-place finish (17:00.72).St. Mary?s at Woods Trail RaceAt Thetford Academy in Vermont, freshman Jack Carroll was the top finisher for the Spartans as he was 17th overall in the Division 4 race.FIELD HOCKEYLynnfield 2, Man-Essex 2At Manchester, the Pioneers (10-0-2, 9-0-2 Cape Ann League) found themselves in a 2-0 hole early against the rival Hornets. But Bailey Fanikos and Stefania DeAngelis had goals as the Pioneers tied the game at the break.The second half would be dominated by Lynnfield but the Pioneers couldn?t put home the game-winner.?We had a number of opportunities to win the game and just couldn?t do it,” Lynnfield coach Mamie Reardon saidVOLLEYBALLKIPP 3, Codman Acad. 0Thanks to strong serving from P.K. Gaye and Marie Kamba, the Panthers swept to 25-19, 25-18 and 25-16 victories.BOYS SOCCERLynnfield 1, Man-Essex 1At Manchester, the Pioneers (4-2-3) got a goal from Sam Huebschman with 20:00 left in the second half but couldn?t hold on as the hosts scored 10 minutes later to force the tie.
