SAUGUS – Prior to its non-conference game with Cape Cod Tech on Saturday afternoon, the Saugus football team, sporting a meaningful new look, honored a contingent of local military figures, both past and present. As it turns out, not even its new camouflage uniforms could prevent the Sachems? high-octane offense from standing out in a 41-0 rout at Stackpole Field.?We?ve played a pretty tough schedule thus far, so our guys felt that they deserved a game like this,” said Coach Mike Broderick, who is already looking forward to a meeting with North Reading on Friday (3:45).?It?s a huge game for us with playoff implications riding on it,” he continued. “I?m hoping the good vibes from today can carry over into this week?s practices.”Three drives featuring just 11 plays (Luke Surette extra points included) were all the hosts needed to build a 21-0 lead by the 3:14 mark of the opening period.Senior quarterback Justin Winn took the game?s second play from scrimmage 44 yards to pay dirt before senior running back Dan Cacciola (3 touchdowns) scored from 21 yards out following a quick three-and-out from the Crusaders. An 18-yard scoring run from Cacciola would cap off Saugus? next drive, which began with big gains from Seth Roy (12 yards) and Winn (22).?He continues to do a tremendous job in running our offense,” lauded Broderick of Winn, who racked up 148 rushing yards on just five carries. “We weren?t forced to put the ball in the air today thanks to our depth running.”Following a turnover on downs, the Sachems? signal-caller opened the second quarter with a 53-yard keeper down to the visitors? 1-yard line, where he was pushed out of bounds, setting up Cacciola for a score on the next play. After recovering a Bobby Askew fumble, sophomore defensive back Marvens Moise hopped into the hosts? backfield, where he earned two touches for 15 yards before a 30-yard gain from Winn reached Cape Cod Tech?s 27-yard line.Senior Adam DiChiara needed just one play to extend the Saugus lead with 2:57 remaining in the half. Not to be forgotten was the job done by the Sachems? defense, which yielded just two first downs to the Crusaders, who mustered just one play of 10 yards or more in the opening 22 minutes.Moise would cap the scoring on the hosts? first play of the third quarter, scoring from the goal line moments after a high snap from the 23-yard line resulted in a Saugus fumble recovery. With the game well in hand, Saugus was able to factor in its depth chart, getting solid production from a pair of sophomores, quarterback Tom Trainor and running back Kyle Lennan, who added an interception late in the third period.?It?s great getting those guys into games and on film because it allows us to evaluate their progress,” explained Broderick. “It was a total team effort today.”
