Golf: English tops Classical, splits series

The English High golf team defeated Classical, 38 1/2-33 1/2, Tuesday at Gannon Golf Course, earning a split for the season in the cross-city rivalry.This one was close all the way with English pulling out the win down the stretch.?It?s always great to get out there (against Classical). The kids get really excited for it,” English coach Tara Friedman said. “They really worked well together as a team. It was great.”English had wins from Matt Sencabaugh, who defeated Mark Brazell, 5-4, at No. 1. Joe Calnan defeated Andre Gaudet, 5 1/2-3 1/2, at No. 3 and Chris Cole defeated Sean Dean, 8 1/2-1/2 at No. 4. Classical?s Kyle Morrill defeated Mathieu Bruneau at No. 2, 5-4; Brandon Devin defeated English?s Matt Cole at No. 5, 5-4 and Sean Devin defeated Nick Madden, 6 1/2-2 1/2. At No. 6, English?s Bubba Comeau tied Travis Ryan and at No. 7, English?s Heather Cummings tied Steven Patrie.English is 4-5 and Classical is 3-10-1.?There were six really close matches,” Classical coach Jack Morrison said. “I thought the bottom of the lineup played well … They (the English and Classical kids) all get along pretty well. It was a good, spirited match.”Peabody 44 1/2, Saugus 27 1/2At Cedar Glen, the Sachems (7-7) had wins from J.C. Lever at No. 1, 5-4, and Eric Guarino at No. 8, 6-3. The two teams meet again today at The Meadow in Peabody.Peabody (9-2) got wins from No. 2 Steve Ferrante, 7-2; No. 3 Ted Izzo, 5-4; No. 4 Pat McCarthy, 6-3; No. 5 Steve Goggin, 8 1/2-1/2; and No. 7 Tom Southern, 7-2. The two teams go at it again later this week when St. John?s Prep travels to Barnstable. They?ll be playing at Hyannisport Golf Course.Williams 184, Fenwick 64At Braintree Golf Course, John Bucchieri had 26 points for the Crusaders (2-6) and Matt Garofalo, 24 points. Both players are seniors from Peabody.Beverly 53, Salem 19Winthrop 40, Salem 32At Olde Salem Greens, the double-dip leaves Salem at 7-10. Wes Schaejbe was the only winner against Beverly, taking his match, 5 1/2-3 1/2.Against Winthrop, Derek Zwiercan won 7-2, and Andrew McCrae won 6-3.
