SAUGUS – State Police said a construction crew ruptured a gas main on Route 1 in Saugus Tuesday afternoon, causing officials to close the highway for about a half hour.Police said in a press release that a construction crew hit a gas main on Route 1 near Walnut Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both northbound and southbound traffic on the road were shut down as Saugus Police and Fire, State Police and utility crews responded to the scene, Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said.The northbound lanes were reopened at 3:55 p.m. and the southbound lanes opened shortly thereafter. A construction detail was expected to remain at the scene into the evening.
