LYNN – A judge found a city man to be a danger and ordered him held on $5,000 bail after a woman said the defendant had abused and threatened to kill her multiple times during the two-month relationship.Bernard Gadson, 24, of 65 Gardiner St., pleaded not guilty Sept. 25 to assault and battery on a family/household member.Police reported responding to the Gardiner Street residence twice the evening of Sept. 24. The first time, Gadson and a witness told officers there was no problem, and officers saw no signs of a disturbance, police reported. An hour later, police found the alleged victim crying and seemingly intoxicated while standing in the driveway with her luggage. The alleged victim told police Gadson had punched her in the stomach multiple times and then punched her in the ribs – where she had been injured in a recent car accident, police reported. The attack stemmed from an argument over her supposedly flirting with a man at the mall, the woman told police.Gadson said the alleged victim had been drinking and they argued when he wouldn’t let her drive home. She “became crazy” and threatened to call police and say he hit her, Gadson told officers according to court documents.A witness reported hearing the argument but not seeing any physical assault, police said.A Lynn District Court judge ordered Gadson held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for last Thursday. At the hearing, Essex Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia requested Gadson be found a danger and be held pending trial. Bellavia also requested Gadson’s bail be revoked on a previous case, according to court documents.Bellavia said Gadson had given the alleged victim a black eye, threatened to kill the woman if she ever sent him to jail and, in the recent incident, had (along with a cousin) held the alleged victim down when she tried to call police, according to court documents.Defense attorney Arthur Carakatsane requested conditions of release and that the defendant not be found a danger.Judge Cathleen Campbell found Gadson to be a danger but ordered conditions of release including $5,000 cash bail, weekly probation checks, no possession of weapons, remaining drug and alcohol free and maintaining or seeking a job.
