Soccer: Lynnfield boys win a big one

The Lynnfield High boys soccer team christened its new sports complex by defeating Manchester-Essex, 2-0.The win gives the Pioneers (6-2-4) a four-point lead over the Hornets for first place in the Cape Ann League Small. The game was scoreless until Kuba Jablonka put one in with eight minutes remaining. He also helped set up Thomas Anastasi’s goal that iced the game with two minutes left.”It was a high-level game,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “We had a bunch of kids who played well, and I’m happy about that.”It was a very even game all the way through, but we converted in the end,” he said.Revere 1, Swampscott 0At Revere, the Patriots (7-2-2) needed the win to qualify for the state tournament.”For us, mentally, it was a tough game because we wanted the two points,” coach Abdel Rhazi said. “Sometimes, that makes it harder.”The Patriots, who had a tough game Thursday against Beverly, couldn’t put one across in the first half. But 15 minutes into the second half, Mateos Dias scored off a free kick.”The most important thing is we won,” said Rhazi. “We’re looking forward to our next game.”St. John’s (D) 3, St. John’s (S) 0At Danvers, Patrick Foley had two goals (and has 11 for year), and Sam Terel one as the Eagles raised their record to 10-0-3.Keeper Zach Rowell had five saves and recorded his eighth shutout. Striker Chris Chilton played well, coach Dave Crowell said, as did Tom Erickson.The Prep will play an intra-city game Monday at Danvers High.Mystic Valley 0, Tech 0At Manning Field, keeper Tyler Beliveau and sweeper Erick Imul had strong games as the Tigers’ went to 2-8-3.”All around, the kids played well,” coach Fred Gallo said. “It’s just a matter of getting shots on net. It’s what we’ve struggled with all year.”In another game, Gloucester defeated Bishop Fenwick, 2-0.GIRLS SOCCERSaugus 6, Everett 0At Saugus, Nicole Coluccio had a pair for goals with Gabby Valente, Olivia Valente, Ali Kotowski and Mikayla Perella all chipping in one. Caitlin Williams was in net for the win. The Sachems (5-6-2) also had strong play from Rachel Nazzaro a center midfield and Briana Melendez on defense.Fenwick 3, Arl. Cath. 0At Arlington, the Crusaders, 9-2, qualified for the tournament with goals from Danielle DelTorto, Colleen Corcoran and Sydney Brennan.Keeper Merry Harrington had eight saves.In other soccer action, Revere won by forfeit over Cristo Rey, which did not have enough players.
