REVERE ? Revere Police are reminding drivers to obey the rules of the road as the department opens a campaign to increase enforcement against speeding and aggressive drivers.?Speeding translates to death on our roadways,” Revere Police Chief Joseph Cafarelli said in an announcement posted on the organization’s Facebook page Friday. “During this campaign, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits in Revere. We’ll stop and ticket anyone caught speeding.”Speeding was a contributing factor in more than a third of all fatal crashes in Massachusetts in 2012, according to the latest data available from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Cafarelli said speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around other vehicles, hazardous objects and around unexpected curves in the roads. This puts speeding drivers as well as their passengers and other drivers on the road at risk, the chief said in the press release.Cafarelli said police will also be on the lookout for drivers who speed, change lanes without signaling or yielding to other drivers, and pass other drivers using emergency lanes or on road shoulders.?By consistently enforcing traffic laws, increasing fines and other penalties against offenders, and impressing upon citizens the importance of their own safe driving habits, we can show that this dangerous behavior simply won’t be tolerated” said Cafarelli.
