Roundup: English girls start tough week with loss

The Lynn English girls soccer team, in the midst of a trying season, opened what should prove to be the toughest week of its schedule with a 6-0 setback against host Salem on Monday evening.Things won?t get any easier for the Bulldogs going forward as they are right back at it tonight against Peabody, the class of the Northeastern Conference.?It?s been a struggle but all we can do is keep our heads up and bear through it,” explained Bulldogs coach Ed McNeil, whose team sits at 3-10-1.For Salem (8-4-1), the victory pushes it one step closer to locking up a spot in the MIAA state tournament.On Monday, the Witches scored three times in each half, the first from Amanda Mullins (assisted by Hannah Van De Stadt) two minutes in before Sydney Rocheville and Deema Hijleh (from Katherine Towey) tallied two minutes apart late in the period.Jackie Panneton opened the second half with her first varsity goal (assisted by Sandy Pelkowsky) before Hayley Jellison and Shannon Burke closed the scoring on respective helpers from Hijleh and Angela Berry.Ariana Gafney made seven saves in the shutout.The hosts? sophomore trio of halfback Krista Bowden, fullback Taylor Sullivan and forward Emma Trahant played well in the loss.?They?re a group of young players with a lot of promise,” lauded McNeil of the classmates. “I have very big expectations for them going forward.”Peabody 6, Classical 1At Peabody, the Tanners improved to an impressive 12-1-1 with a victory over the Rams. Classical (4-8-3) got its lone tally late in the second half from Emily Bucklin, who finished off a corner kick from Taylor Ferraro, breaking up Kayla Santos? shutout bid.BOYS SOCCERMarblehead 1, Tech 0At Tech, the Tigers? defense, backed by senior goalkeeper Tyler Beliveau, put forth a valiant effort but fell on Chris Brady?s goal in the 71st minute, assisted by Jacob Wikar. Tech (2-9-3) mustered just five shots on Magicians goalkeeper Nate Witherell, who posted his fifth shutout of the season.Marblehead (6-6-1) continues its quest for a state tournament berth on Wednesday at home against Gloucester while the Tigers play host to Shawsheen Tech.Beverly 4, Fenwick 0At Fenwick, the Panthers led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Nahuel Pittamiglio before pulling away over the final 40 minutes, improving to 10-0-2.Elias Crandell, Alesio Kanani and Ewan Sellars tallied in the second half to provide Justin Carnavale (5 saves) with more than enough insurance for his second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season. Beverly plays at Classical on Wednesday (6).Prep 1, Danvers 0At Danvers, a strong defensive effort, particularly from Quinn Byrne in his first varsity start, helped goalkeeper Zach Rowell (1 save) pick up his ninth shutout of the season. The Eagles? lone tally came from Aiden Robinson, assisted by Pat Foly.The Prep (11-0-3) hosts Xaverian on Wednesday (4).Malden 2, Revere 0At Revere, the Patriots were hit with a costly red card midway through the second half, leading to both Golden Tornados tallies. Revere (7-3-2) will look to rebound on Wednesday at home against Salem.FIELD HOCKEYLynnfield 6, Georgetown 1At Georgetown, the Pioneers cruised to victory behind a hat trick from Bailey Fanikos. The visitors got two goals from Marianne Olivieri and a solo tally from Kathleen Hamm in addition to strong efforts from Lilli Patterson and Lauren Guerra. Lynnfield (12-0-2) is back at it tonight against Haverhill.Cent. Catholic 3, Fenwick 1At Lawrence, the Crusaders? lone tally from Stefanie Libby wasn?t enough even with an impressive 14-save performance by goalie Taylor Farrin. Fenwick (2-8-4) travels to Manchester-Essex on Wednesday (3:45).GOLFSt. Mary?s 170, Austin 153At Gannon Golf Course, the Spartans improved to 13-3, led by the trio of Shawn MacBurnie (30 points), Nick Amenta and Emmitt O?Shea, who totaled 25 points apiece.
