Football: Two winning streaks on the line

Steve Krause

October 16, 2014 by Steve Krause

Two of the last four undefeated and untied teams on the North Shore put their records on the line Friday when Winthrop visits Classical and Bishop Fenwick entertains St. Mary’s.In both cases, the Lynn teams will attempt to snap two-game losing streaks. After opening the season with a tension-filled win over Winthrop, Classical has won only once — a 37-14 victory over Salem. It’s been downhill since. Two weeks ago, the Rams walked into Peabody and saw Doug Santos put up more than 300 yards of total offense on them; last week, they fell to Danvers at Dr. Deering Stadium. They will be returning to Manning Field for the first since their Week 2 loss to Marblehead. The Winthrop Vikings (5-0) invaded Coley Lee Field in Peabody last Friday and upended the previously-unbeaten Tanners, 21-7. Last year, Classical beat the Vikings handily, 38-12.St. Mary’s at FenwickAt Donaldson Field (7), The Crusaders (5-0) are shooting for their 22nd victory in a row after having climbed back from an early 9-0 deficit to Austin Prep last week to win, 20-9. Lynn’s Rufus Rushins ran for 122 yards in the victory.St. Mary’s, after getting off to a 3-0 start, have run into trouble in their own league (Catholic Central/Large), going 1-2 thus far. After beating Austin Prep in Week 3, the Spartans have lost back-to-back games to Archbishop Williams and Cardinal Spellman.Matt Anastasi scored three of Spellman’s four touchdowns and ran for 219 yards.Meanwhile, Abraham Toe ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans.Pentucket at SaugusAt Stackpole Field (7), the 4-2 Sachems will play a team from their former league — the Cape Ann Large — Friday. This is also the Sachems’ final game of the regular season, as they have a bye next week. The first round of the playoffs begins Oct. 31.Saugus has recovered nicely from a ghastly season-opening loss to Winthrop to win four of its last five games — its only loss being a 41-33 defeat to English. Offense has not been Saugus’ problem, as both quarterback Justin Winn and running back Dan Cacciola have ripped their opponents up.Swampscott at GloucesterAt Newell Stadium (7), the Big Blue (1-4) have had a week to bask in the glow of their 29-23 win over English, as they’re coming off a bye.Swampscott fell behind in that game,, 23-7. However, led by Mike Faia and Devin Conroy, the Big Blue blanked the Bulldogs in the second half to earn their first win of the season.Gloucester is 3-3, and has neither won nor lost two games in a row.The Fishermen are coming off a win against English last week in which the Bulldogs were threatening to pull the game out when time ran out.Revere at PeabodyAt Coley Lee Field (7), the Tanners are looking to get back on the horse again against a Revere team that won its second game of the season last Friday night … 28-6 over Salem. The Patriots’ Caleb Silva and Danny Murphy scored two touchdowns each in the victory.Peabody’s only highlight last Friday was a touchdown pass from Mike Raymond to Ugonna Okinawa that — at the time — tied the game at 7-7. The Tanners eventually lost, 21-7, to suffer its first defeat.Danvers at SalemAt Bertram Field (7), the Witches are still looking for their first win of the season for new coach Matt Bouchard. The resurgent Falcons have won two straight, including last week’s victory over Classical.
