The Classical boys soccer team moved to within a point of qualifying for the state tournament Friday with a taut 1-0 win over Revere.”It was a pretty good game,” said Classical coach Rob Upton. “We were two evenly-matched teams, and we had a good effort by our defense.”We did a good job of shutting down two of their key players, and that made a big difference.”Karegeya Nasibu scored the game’s only goal, off a throw-in by Tyler Way.Strati Saranteas had “quite a few saves” in goal, Upton said.Classical is 8-6-1.Peabody 4, Salem 2At Salem, Ben Manoogian scored three goals as the Tanners moved to 13-0-1 in the Northeastern Conference and 13-1-1 overall.The Connecticut College-bound Manoogian’s hat trick raised his season’s total to 24.Bobby Caproni scored Peabody’s other goals. Nathan Russell and Gabriel Andreatolla scored for Salem (5-8-1) which must win three of its next five to make the tournament.KIPP 7, Pioneer 1At Pioneer, KIPP pushed its record to 5-3-2 despite going into halftime tied 1-1.The Panthers responded with a second-half onslaught that saw three goals from junior Charlie Huffman, two from sophomore Jairo Merino Huezo and one from sophomore Manny Ortega.Coupled with Huffman’s first half strike on a header from short range off a corner kick, the four goals today push his league-leading total to 16 on the season.Sophomore goalkeeper Jordanny Delgado earned his fifth win of the season in net and made two saves.GIRLS SOCCERClassical 8, Revere 0At Manning Field, Shannon Magner led the way with three goals for the 4-9-3 Rams. Gizzi had an assist, as did Emily Nelson and Molly Tansey.Top defensive performers were Katherine Scacchi, Sarah Godschall, Macayla Lachance and Katrina Silva. Rebecca Sabino had five saves.Beverly 8, English 0At Beverly, the Panthers raised their record to 10-4-2.”I thought English really did a good job,” said Kristin Simpson “They weren’t used to playing on grass, and I think that had a lot to do with it.”Danvers 5, Winthrop 1At Danvers, the Falcons (10-5-1) led 2-1 at the end of the first half, but outscored the Vikings 3-0 in the second half to pull away. Danvers shared the wealth, as five different players scored, (Meaghan McCarriston, Emily Murphy, Olivia Davis, Becca Horn and Meaghan McKenna). Danvers plays Marblehead Tuesday.
