CHESTNUT HILL – There was a distinct local flavor to two athletic celebrations at Boston College over the weekend.Jeff Waldron, a former standout catcher from Lynn, was inducted in the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame Friday night. He and the other inductees were honored at halftime of the BC-Clemson football game Saturday.Frank DeFelice of Swampscott, a former football and baseball starter at BC, was honored along with his teammates on the 1964 football team, which registered a shocking 21-14 upset of powerhouse Syracuse on the way to a 6-3 record. The ’64 team, which gathered for a reception Friday night, was introduced on the field after the first quarter of the Clemson game.Waldron was a career .341 hitter at BC, recording 198 hits, 18 home runs and earning All-Big East first-team honors in 1998 and ’99. He still holds the BC record for career walks (99), while ranking third in on-base percentage (.441). Waldron was drafted by the Red Sox in 1999 and played six seasons of minor league baseball in the Boston, Arizona and Texas organizations.The Syracuse team that DeFelice and his teammates upended in 1964 featured a dream backfield of Jim Nance and Floyd Little. Larry Csonka and future BC head coach Tom Coughlin also played for the Orangemen that year. DeFelice and Coughlin served together as assistants under Jack Bicknell.DeFelice compiled 465 wins in a Hall of Fame high school baseball coaching career at Swampscott High. He is an assistant coach at Endicott College. He coached football at the high school and collegiate levels for 50 years, concluding his career at Bentley last year.
