College Notebook: Saugus’ Vecchione ECAC Player of the Week

Mike Vecchione and the Union College hockey team are back to business after a wild ride last year that culminated in the Dutchmen winning the 2014 national championship.
The Saugus resident and Malden Catholic graduate played in integral role in the Dutchmen?s success and he?s off to a strong start again this year. Vecchione, who was on the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team last year, was just named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week for the second week in a row.
Vecchione had a goal and four assists in Union?s road sweep of Maine last weekend. In the series opener, he scored the game winning goal in his team?s 3-0 win. The following night, Vecchione recorded a career-high three assists is a 5-2 win.
Vecchione now has four consecutive multi-point games and he leads his team in scoring with three goals and six assists in four games. He?s tied with Nebraska-Omaha?s Jake Guentzel for the national lead in points. Union is 4-0.

Freshman Francesca Galeazzi of Lynn/Lynn Classical leads the Salve Regina women?s soccer team in scoring with six goals.

The Framingham State University women?s soccer team has a couple of local players contributing this season. Senior Marisa Parent of Revere recently surpassed the 100 career- point mark when she scored two goals in a 4-3 win over Salve Regina. Parent has 13 goals and three assists this season.
Tess Gorman, a sophomore from Swampscott/Swampscott High, plays defense for the Rams. She has started 14 games.

Another former Swampscott High girls soccer player, Kelly Birchmore, scored a goal for the Salem State women?s soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Worcester State University last Saturday.

The Fitchburg State University football team has three players from the area on its roster. Taron Seaforth, a junior, 6-0, 180-pound defensive back from Lynn English has 18 tackles, four assists and one interception.
Another former English High player, Malcolm Brown-Simpson, is a junior linebacker for the Rams. He?s played in six games and has 17 tackles and 11 assists. He also has 1.5 sacks per game.
On the up-and-coming side, Alex Brady of Lynn is seeing some action for the Rams. The 5-9, 230-pound defensive lineman has played in four games. Brady, a freshman, attended Malden Catholic High School.
Fitchburg is off to a good start with a 5-2 (3-2 conference) record.

Nicole Lowe of Saugus/Saugus High is a senior on the Anna Maria College field hockey team. Lowe is second on the team in points with 27 (she has nine goals and nine assists). The AmCats are 9-8.

Danielle Gaudet of Lynn/Buckingham, Browne and Nichols, is a member of the Boston College fencing team.
