SAUGUS – Despite the wind and rain, shoppers were out bright and early on Wednesday, waiting to burst through the doors of the new Walmart supercenter on Route 1 North.Speaking beside an archway of red, white and blue balloons, store manager Mark Gullotti referred to the dogma of founder Sam Walton. “Mr. Sam said, ?If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone,'” he said during the store’s opening ceremony at 7:30 a.m.In addition to the $1,850 that the store has raised for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Gullotti announced that another $5,000 will be divided between six organizations, including the Saugus Police Department, Saugus Fire Department, the Department of Youth and Recreation and Saugus Public Schools.”We have check cashing if you want to try to cash those checks,” he said as he distributed the large, novelty-style checks. “This is only the beginning of our commitment to Saugus.”Selectman Debra Panetta said she was pleased with the opening. “It was a welcoming ceremony, filled with lots of energy and a strong commitment to Saugus,” she said.Deputy assessor Ron Keohan said the property at 770 Broadway is valued at $1.2 million. He estimates the town could make up to $900,000 per year from property taxes.Walmart regional vice president Paul Busby said 12 other stores would be opening later in the day throughout the country as part of Walmart’s “robust expansion plan. Hopefully, we can bring down your cost of living,” he said.As Gullotti cut the ribbon, customers raced into the store. “Out of the way, we’ve been waiting!” yelled one patron as she barreled through the crowd with her shopping cart.Customers also had the opportunity to use the store’s Cartveyor, a specially designed escalator that will carry a full shopping cart down to the first floor.State Rep. Donald Wong said he is confident the store will be successful given its low price points and location on Route 1. “I walked the aisles and I saw the prices and – they’re great,” said Wong, adding that he looks forward to returning with his granddaughter.Pat Vicente of Saugus was glad to see a Walmart in town having previously frequented the Peabody store. “I’m happy it’s here,” she said.Shopping for an umbrella, Lexi Jones of Revere said she was impressed with the store’s cleanliness and variety of items.
