The score was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes, but St. Mary?s could not keep up its precise play in the second half, as the Spartans fell 5-2.
?We had our chances to build a lead in the first half, but we just did not cash in on those chances when the opportunity presented itself,” St. Mary?s coach Jim Foley said. “Spellman is a very good and well coached team, and we performed admirably against them in tough playing conditions.”
Taylor Capozzi and Kaylin Deschenes score a goal each for St. Mary?s. Temi Falayi had a solid performance at outside midfielder for the Spartans (9-6-2)..
Lynnfield 4, Ipswich 1
At Lynnfield, Jess Duhaime dominated the the first 11 minutes for the Pioneers, recording a hat trick during that span to give Lynnfield a comfortable 3-1 lead in the first half. The Pioneers scored their final goal in midway though the second half, when Paige MacEachern scored from 20 yards away assisted by Emily Scollard.
Anchoring a stingy Pioneers defense were Kelly Look, Abby Petras, Kelly Nevils, Meryl Braconnier and Hannah Travers.
Lynnfield (11-4-2) will play its last game of the regular season Saturday against Wayland.
Pairings for the upcoming state tournament will be announced a week from Friday.
Fenwick 5, Austin Prep 2
At Austin Prep, Fenwick was down 2-1 late in the first half, but tied the game 2-2 with 1:02 remaining when on a goal by Colleen Corcoran.
?The weather played a major factor, and being tied 2-2 after playing against the wind for 40 minutes was the difference,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said.
Seven minutes into the second half, the power went out and there was a 10-minute delay until it was restored. The Crusaders were restored as well, as they exploded for three goals in the next 10 minutes. Corcoran and Jackie Edgett scored two goals apiece to lead the way for Fenwick. Danielle DelTorto chimed in with a goal for the Crusaders (12-3).
BOYS SOCCER
KIPP 0, Codman Acad. 0
At Manning Field, in a rain-shortened game, the wind and rain prevented any cohesive play from either team over the 45 minutes of soccer, said KIPP coach Gray Visco. Both goalies made some big saves to preserve the scoreless tie.
Sophomore Jordanny Delgado had his first shutout. Juniors Carlos Estrada, Jason Lopez, and Jonnatan Merida made standout defensive efforts in the back and sophomore Jairo Merino Huezo and freshman Josh Canales nearly put home a few close-range shots.
Now 6-3-3, KIPP is home next Thursday (7) for its first-ever senior night,
VOLLEYBALL
Spellman 3, St. Mary?s 0
At Spellman, the Spartans? (7-11) postseason hopes were dashed (13-25, 11-25, 13-25).
?We have taken big strides from last year to this year which is very encouraging,” St. Mary?s coach Erin Menard said. “I am very happy with the direction our team and program is moving in.”
Leading the way for the Spartans was Francesca Simon (5 kills,6 digs) and Jessica Martinello (solid all-around performance).
FIELD HOCKEY
Peabody 1, Revere 0
At Peabody, it was senior night for the Tanners, and senior Emily Bettencourt scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The game was called after one half of play due to inclement weather. The five other Peabody seniors that were honored were: Kristina Deao; Joelle Nagle; Allison Daley; Evie Anderle and Cayli Armstrong.
