Roundup: Mother Nature can’t slow down St. Mary’s runners

The CCL meet at Franklin Park on Thursday night was ran in the middle of a monsoon, but Mother Nature could now slow down the St. Mary’s boys and girls cross country teams. The Spartans boys finished second (54 points), and the girls finished third (69 points).”It was horrible conditions to say the least, but our boys and girls ran terrific through this miserable night,” St. Mar’s coach Dominic Finelli said.The St. Mary’s boys took three of the top 10 spots in this 3.1-mile race, as its top three finishers were Matt McManus (18:41), Cody Murtagh (18:57) and Tony Mwangi (19:08). The Spartans girls were led by senior Tia Foglietta (third, 20:44). Sarah Corbett had a strong showing for St. Mary’s (23:16). Fenwick also took part in this race, and its girls finished second (48 points). The Crusaders were led by the trio of Sydney Packard (seventh, 21:41), Mary Pasquale (ninth, 22:35) and Megan Clancy (11th, 23:02). Matt Loehle had a solid performance for the Fenwick boys (15th, 19:47).VOLLEYBALLMarblehead 3, Swampscott 0At Swampscott, the Magicians (15-3) produced another strong performance (25-13, 25-20, 25-18). Jenny Norcross and Eve Rice had five assists each for Marblehead. Emily Promise recorded 20 assists for the Magicians. Samantha Payne chipped in with three kills and two blocks for Marblehead. Swampscott (5-11) will play its last game of the season on Monday at Hamilton-Wenham.Lynnfield 3, Hamilton-Wenham 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers won 25-7, 25-14 and 25-16 to improve their record to 15-2. Juniors Jessica Dwyer had 13 digs and three aces while Shannon Ryan contributed eight digs and 11 assists.
