WOBURN – A Revere man was held on $2,500 cash bail and ordered subject to house arrest after police said the man and an accomplice tried to rob a convenience store at gunpoint and the clerk refused to hand over money.”The clerk in this situation showed incredible bravery, but we would, of course, never recommend that someone try to fight off a robber who is pointing a gun at you,” Stoneham Police Chief James McIntyre said in a press release Monday.Brett Osgood, 25, of Revere, pleaded not guilty Monday in Woburn District Court to charges of attempt to commit a crime, armed robbery; malicious or wanton destruction of property +$250; assault with a dangerous weapon; and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.Police said Osgood went into the “C-Store” convenience store on Main Street in Stoneham late Saturday evening and bought a $2 scratch ticket. Osgood allegedly returned with a man in his 40s and tried to redeem the ticket. As the clerk had the register open, one of the men allegedly pulled a gun and ordered the clerk to keep the register open. The clerk refused and said he wouldn’t hand over any money, police said. The second suspect, who remains at large, hit the clerk several times in the face while Osgood tried to open a lottery ticket dispenser and the cash register, police said. Both Osgood and the other suspect were unsuccessful opening the cash register, and the clerk told police he threw chili powder in the robbers’ faces, prompting them to flee. The clerk followed the fleeing suspects and noted their license plate, which was registered to Osgood’s home in Revere, police said. Officers said the clerk positively identified Osgood as one of his assailants.A spokesperson for Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Judge Timothy Galley set bail at $2,500 and ordered conditions of release including that Osgood be under house arrest and GPS monitoring. Osgood is scheduled to return to court Nov. 25.
