Soccer: Classical boys lose final game to Everett

While a victory over a Division 1 opponent would have been the perfect ending to its lengthy regular season, Lynn Classical’s boys soccer will attack the MIAA state tournament following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Everett on Monday evening.An early Crimson Tide tally held up despite the best efforts of Rams’ striker Issa Jalloh, who drew coach Rob Upton’s praises along with goalkeeper Strati Saranteas. Both played strong strong games, along with standout defenseman Jesus Viveros.”The guys played extremely well tonight against a very tough opponent,” said Upton, who is awaiting word on a seeding with the brackets set to come out on Friday.Classical (10-7-1) is looking to build on last seasons’ playoff success where they defeated Chelsea, 1-0, in the opening round before an ensuing loss to Tech Boston.”We have a lot of guys on this team with three to four years of experience that have already been to the postseason. We’re pretty optimistic moving forward,” Upton said..Peabody 2, Somerville 0At Somerville, the Tanners (15-1-2) capped a sensational regular season with a shutout victory, led by goalkeeper Kevin Lebel (9 saves). Mark Couto and Bobby Caproni scored for Peabody with Nick Bettencourt assisting on both.The Northeastern Conference (Large) champions got strong games from a pair of midfielders, Kenny Sawyer and Lucas Amaral, as well as defenseman Christian Morales.”We were able to achieve our first goal by winning the league and now were hoping to advance deep into the tournament,” said coach Stan McKeen of the Tanners’ tournament expectations.Fenwick 1, Gloucester 0At Gloucester, Connor Alexander finished off a feed from Cam Mirra with 15 minutes remaining in the second half to up the Crusaders record to 6-8-2. Gavin Murray earned the shutout for Fenwick which concludes its season at home against Lynn Tech on Wednesday (7).Cath. Mem. 1, Lynnfield 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers yielded the winning goal with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, falling to 10-3-5 on the season. Nick Colluci played well in net for Lynnfield.Wakefield 5, Swampscott 2At Swampscott, the Big Blue (6-11-1) got a goal in each half from Harry Parker and Mike Coffey, respectively, in a season-ending loss to the Warriors. Jack Herlihy, a central figure throughout the season on defense, played well for Swampscott. The Big Blue trailed by one at halftime.GIRLS SOCCERMarblehead 3, Malden 0At Malden, goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn pitched her 10th shutout of the season for the Magicians,who got goals from Mia Bonjiorno, Lexi Bostley and Meghan Ryan.Marblehead (14-1-3) travels to Swampscott Wednesday (4) with the Northeastern Conference (Small) title on the line.Salem 2, Haverhill 0At Salem, Sydney Hanford (goal), Katherine Towey (assist), Hannah Van De Stadt (assist) and goalkeeper Arianna Gaffney (sixth shutout) were honored along with their fellow seniors in a pregame ceremony before shining in a victory.Salem (11-6-1, 9-6-1) led 1-0 at halftime before sophomore Tayla O’Leary capped the scoring about midway through the second period. Senior Sandy Pelkowsky turned in a strong defensive effort along with junior Hayley Jellison and freshman Chanelle Camah.Chelmsford 1, Fenwick 0At Chelmsford, Merry Harrington played a phenomenal game in net, making 13 saves for the Crusaders who couldn’t find a rhythm offensively. Jenny Nasser, Ellen Fantozzi and Emily Smith had great games on defense for Fenwick who play Ipswich Wednesday.
