The Swampscott High girls soccer team lived to fight another day in the Division 3 North tournament thanks to a 2-0 win over Bedford Monday at Swampscott.
Meaghan Hartmann scored with two seconds left in the first half to put the Big Blue up 1-0 (Jaymie Caponigro had the assist). Hartmann’s goal was a blast from outside the 18-yard line. Swampscott added some insurance when Hartmann scored again with 12 minutes left in the game. Megan Marocco had the assist. Sam Rizzo (6 saves) was in net.
?It was a tight game,” coach Ken Leeder said. “It was a well-played game.”
Swampscott, the No. 5 seed at 14-5-1, will play Stoneham Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Swampscott. Stoneham advanced with a win over Hamilton-Wenham. Bedford, the No. 12 seed, plays in the Dual County League.
Marblehead 4, Salem 0
At Piper Field, the No. 4 seeded Magicians (16-1-3) were in control throughout as they shutout the No. 13 Witches (11-7-1) in the opening round of the Division 2 North tournament.
Meghan McCarthy scored twice to lead the offense with Lexi Bosley and Elise Joyce also having goals. It was the 12th shutout of the season for the Magicians, whose last blemish came in a 0-0 tie with Salem nine games ago.
Marblehead hosts either North Andover or Danvers on Thursday (TBA) in the quarterfinals.
Peabody 2, Boston Latin 0
At Coley Lee Field in Peabody, the second seeded Tanners (16-1-2) got a scare for a half from the pesky Dragons as they led only 1-0 at the break before scoring again in the second to put the game away.
Chloe Gizzi got the game-winner with just over two minutes left in the first half. Emily Nelson then added the insurance tally, set up by Sydney Cooke, early in the second half. The Tanners host No. 7 Central Catholic in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday (6).
Lynnfield 2, Wayland 0
In Division 3 North quarterfinal play at Lynnfield, the Pioneers (13-4-2) took a 1-0 lead 16 minutes into the game when Liz Reed scored off a direct kick from the corner. Reed ?s left-footed shot sent the ball to the far post top corner. The Pioneers added a bit of a cushion at the 27th minute when Reed took a corner and sent it out front where Kelly Look got a piece of it and put it in the net.
Wayland only had five shots on goalie Hannah Travers, most of them coming from a distance.
?I thought our defense did a really nice job shutting them down,” coach Mark Vermont said.
Lynnfield will play Weston Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Lynnfield.
Winthrop 8, Mt. Alvernia 0
At Mt. Alvernia, the No. 16 seeded Vikings (8-9-2) scored a major upset in defeating No. 1 seed Mt. Alvernia in a Division 4 North opening round game. Regina Garufo had a hat trick for Winthrop with Flora English and Amy Sena added two each. Poli Tsiotos was very solid in net.

Peabody 7, Everett 1
At Coley Lee Field, the No. 3 Tanners (16-1-2) were in control right from the beginning in their Division 1 North opening round game and never looked back against their former rivals from the Greater Boston League.
Joao Correia was the ringleader as he racked up four goals and two assists. Ben Manoogian added a goal and two assists in one half of action while Vageli Andreas as Peabody led 6-1 at halftime.
Peabody hosts Brookline on Thursday (6) in the quarterfinals.
Beverly 4, Danvers 0
At Beverly, the game was scoreless at the half, but once the Panthers (13-0-6) cracked the Falcon armor, the game opened up a bit. Elias Crandell scored the first two goals. Nahuel Pittamiglio, who assisted on Crandell’s first goal, scored the Panthers third goal and Leo Feingold wrapped up the Beverly scoring. The Panthers benefited from a great game by goalie Justin Carnevale, who had some spectacular saves in the early going when the game was up for grabs.
This was a Division 2 North first round game. During the regular season, the Northeastern Conference rivals met twice. Beverly won the first game, 3-1, and the second ended in a scoreless tie. Beverly, the No. 3 seed,
