The Marblehead High boys soccer team came out flying in the first half, scoring four goals en route to a 5-1 win over Greater Lawrence in Division 3 North first round play at Andover.
Jacob Wikar got the ball rolling with a goal four minutes into the game (Jamie Marden assist). Wikar struck again (his 16th of the year) at the 12th minute with Claudio Alvarez providing the assist and Will Gaddis scored at the 20-minute mark (Ignacio Moreno got the assist) to put the Magicians up, 3-0.
Greater Lawrence (8-6-5) got one back, but Marblehead (10-7-4) sucked the wind out of its sails when Liam Healy scored from Chris Colcord for a 4-1 lead at the half. Marblehead?s final goal came 26 minutes into the second half with Alvarez supplying the assist. Nate Witherell had a quiet game in net.
?We did our job,” Marblehead coach Scott Laramie said. “That?s how we?re trying to take this, one game at a time.”
The Magicians are looking to get past that second tournament game, which is something they haven?t been able to do the last two years. In 2013, Marblehead lost to North Reading in the second round and two years ago, to Wilmington. The Magicians play Tewksbury Thursday in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. at Tewksbury.
GIRLS SOCCER
Concord Carlisle 1, Beverly 0
At Beverly, Concord-Carlisle scored with 10 minutes left in the game to send the Panthers (11-5-3) packing in Division 2 North first-round play. The two teams are no strangers, having met in the tournament for the past three years. Last year in the semifinals Concord-Carlisle won 1-0 in overtime and in 2012, Beverly won 2-0.
?I think Concord-Carlisle (seeded ninth) started off strong,” Beverly coach Kristin Simpson said. “They kept possession, but toward the end of the first half and into the second half, we took over.”
The Panthers, the No. 8 seed, had their scoring opportunities, hitting the cross bar twice and the post once. At the other end of the field, Kyra Wolonsavich did a nice job in net for Beverly and sophomore Kage Letts played a great game at center back.
?It was a very good game. It was back and forth,” Simpson said. “I’m very proud of what the girls did. They came in and played against a really good team from a good conference (Dual County League).”
As far as the season goes, Simpson was pleased with how things went after losing 10 players to graduation last year.
North Andover 2, Danvers 1 (PK)
At North Andover, the Falcons (11-7-1) lost a heartbreaker on penalty kicks. Danvers? Meaghan McCarriston scored in the second half with an assist from Katherine Kowalski, but North Andover tied the game up with 13 minutes remaining and then won it in penalty kicks.
VOLLEYBALL
Melrose 3, Bishop Fenwick 1
At Melrose, the Crusaders lost in the Division 2 North quarterfinals. Fenwick took the first set 25-22, but Melrose won the next three, 25-11, 25-12, 25-21. Julia Fusco, Olivia Petras and Sam Lipka played excellent defense for the Crusaders (15-7). Madison Camelo had eight blocks and Alexis Bedard, seven kills.
