November 10, 2014 by Matthew Roy

For most of this season, Marblehead’s A.J. Ernst has proved that he is among the best cross-country runners in Eastern Mass. On Saturday at the Wrentham Development Center, the rest of Ernst’s teammates proved that the Magicians weren’t just a one-man show. The Division 4 boys race had a definitive Northeastern Conference feel as the Magicians and Gloucester dominated the talented field over the 5,000 meter course. In the end, it was Marblehead’s depth that ruled the day as all five scoring runners for Marblehead finished in the top 21 to give the NEC South champs a comfortable win in the team competition (63-97) over the Fishermen. Not to be out done, the Marblehead girls also took a big step into the limelight on Saturday as led by a fourth place finish from Sarah Oliver, the Magicians finished second to Nauset in the Division 4 girls competition. The boys race set up to be a battle between Ernst and Medfield senior Austin Scola and for the most part it was. Scola had a little more in the tank as he took the overall win in 15:43.2 with Ernst ending up behind Tewksbury’s Mike Famiglietti in third (15:51.6).Gloucester’s ace, Everest Crawford, was next to cross the line in fourth (15:58.9) before the Magicians depth began to assert itself. Jared Kokinos was sixth for Marblehead (16:20.2) while teammates Adam Linsky (16:49.9), Elrik Larson (17:07.40) and Michael Weidenbruch (17:09.0) finished 13th, 20th and 21st respectively to give the Magicians enough of a cushion to outdistance Gloucester. In all, Marblehead would place all seven of its runners inside the top 50 places as Hillman Hollister was 28th (17:20) and Pete Morrison finished 47th (17:48).On the girls side of the ledger, the Magicians also had all five of their scoring runners come across inside the top 50 but they couldn’t match Nauset’s depth as they had three of the top 20 and four of the top 25 in all to best Marblehead by 30 points (103-133).Oliver led the way for Marblehead with her fourth place finish (19:16) that saw her run among the leaders all race. Teammate Grace Maguire was 20th (20:01) with Anna Barrell in 33rd (20:44) and Maura Honan, 34th (20:45).In the Division 6 girls race, Lynnfield senior Tia Patterson (19:22.3) and St. Mary’s senior Tia Foglietta (19:55.9) each qualified for the all-state championships thanks to their fourth and eighth place finishes respectively. Lynnfield also got a stellar 16th place finish from Marie Norwood (20:29.8) earn her a spot at Franklin Park. The Pioneers finished seventh as a team with Fenwick in eighth (246) and St. Mary’s in 14th (371). The Crusaders were led by an 18th place finish from Sydney Packard (20:40).In the Division 6 boys race, St. Mary’s was the top local finisher with a 14th place team total, led by Cody Murtagh’s 40th place (18:19). Tech finished 23rd, led by a solid run from Jayden Lowe (19:16).The Peabody boys were part of a spectacular race for the Division 1 title as they, Lowell, Cambridge and Methuen pretty much dominated the competition. Spectacular sophomore Marcelo Rocha was second overall for the Tanners (15:36) as they took four of the top 20 spots but wound up coming up short, taking fourth (100) behind the Red Raiders (80), Hawks (81), and Rangers (85).Riley Dowd was 11th overall for Peabody (16:08) with teammates Jason Karakaedos in 14th (16:12) and Alex Greco, 18th (16:22). The Tanner girls took 10th in the D1 girls race, led by a 12th place from Lauren Barrett (19:32).In the Division 3 boys race, Classical finished 22nd as a team but got a solid run from Tom Mackin, who came home 33rd individually (17:19). Eric Maccori was next best for Classical in 136th (19:00).The Swampscott girls came home ninth as a team in Division 5 with Veronica Rizzo placing 45th (21:24) and Miranda Nocera in 49th (21:29). The Big Blue boys were 13th as a team, led by Bennett Smith in 46th place (17:07).FOOTBALLBurke 22, Tech 14At Dorchester, the Tigers had a chance to force overtime but an interception just before
