Surgeons honored for excellence

Eight physicians from the North Shore have received the 2014 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards.They are Matthew Capozzi, DPM, AACFAS, CWS; Terence P. Doorly, M.D.; Mark LaSpina, DO; William V. Kastrinakis, M.D.; Robert M. Wood, M.D.; Bojan B. Zoric, M.D.; and Richard Goodenough, M.D.The recipients were nominated by the nursing staff and other members of the unit-based care teams where the surgeons operate and care for hospitalized patients. Nursing recipients were nominated by the surgeons with whom they work.Nominations recognize surgeons and nurses who best exemplify professionalism and clinical excellence.Capozzi is a wound specialist and diplomat of the American Academy of Wound Management and an Associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He treats patients with complex foot wounds in the Advanced Wound Center at NSMC Salem Hospital and is in private practice at Peabody Podiatry.Doorly, a neurosurgeon, practices with the North Shore Physicians Group Neurosurgery and Spine and has been on the medical staff of North Shore Medical Center for 21 years.LaSpina practices with Urology Consultants of the North Shore in Salem and has been on the medical staff at NSMC for five years. He also has an office in Newburyport.Kastrinakis is a board certified general surgeon. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is chief of General Surgery at North Shore Medical Center.Wood completed a dual fellowship in surgery of the foot and ankle as well as hip and knee reconstruction. He graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Alberta. He practices at Sports Medicine North.Zoric is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. He is an expert in repair and reconstruction of cartilage, ligaments, and tendons and in arthroscopic surgery of the hip joint. He is a team physician for the US Women’s National Soccer Team and an active member of the US Ski and Snowboard Association physician pool.He also practices at Sports Medicine North.Goodenough was honored with the 2014 Department of Surgery Excellence in Teaching Award, an award that is selected by the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical residents who complete training rotations through NSMC’s Salem and Union hospitals. They nominated the surgeon whose mentorship, teaching excellence and professionalism made the greatest positive impact during their time at NSMC.He is chief of vascular surgery at NSMC, is a board-certified vascular and general surgeon and a member of the surgery practice at the MassGeneral/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. He has been on the medical staff at NSMC for 29 years. Goodenough is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and completed two residencies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and fellowships at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a resident of Beverly.”Young surgeons are always learning and taking in new information every day.” said Marc Rubin, M.D., NSMC chair of surgery. “The best teachers know how to lead by example, and teach others to harness and perfect skills to be able to perform at exemplary levels.”North Shore Medical Center’s Department of Surgery also presented the 2014 Department of Surgery Clinical Excellence and Professionalism Awards for Nursing to: Cynthia Shupp, R.N., Kimberly Benea, R.N., Lisa O’Neil, R.N., and Marian B. Conejo-Suela, R.N., Judith Rathbun, surgical technologist, and Christabelle Quadros, R.N., from Salem Hospital; and Ann Fisher, R.N., Katelyn Ferguson, R.N., Leonelkys Rivas, surgical technologist, Nida Rimando-Castro, R.N., and Sheryl Razney, R.N., from Union Hospital.”The nurses and surgical technicians play a vital rol
