Cabbie flips over run-in with cop

November 20, 2014 by Thor Jourgensen

LYNN – It?s one thing to almost hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk, it?s another thing to almost hit a police officer in a crosswalk and it?s a whole other thing to flip the bird at a police officer after almost hitting him in the crosswalk.Garcia Cab driver Steven DeJesus got accused of doing all three things during this week?s City Council Licensing Committee hearing, and Officer Michael Eddows was on hand in City Hall to recount for councilors the near miss he experienced as he walked across Fayette Street at Essex Street on Oct. 17.?He came within 3 feet of hitting my leg,” Eddows recalled. When he called DeJesus? attention to the close call, Eddows said the driver stopped his cab, rolled down a window and offered Eddows an obscene gesture recognized the world over. The act prompted Eddows to identify himself as a police officer, to which DeJesus responded, “I don?t care, you walk too slow,” according to Eddows. The exchange caught the attention of Officer Paul Holey, who was in a marked cruiser near the busy intersection. DeJesus,a 25-year-old Lynn resident, was cited for a crosswalk violation and subsequently called before the committee for review. Councilors did not waste time suspending his privilege to drive a taxi in the city.Attempts to reach DeJesus Wednesday at Garcia were unsuccessful.
