LYNN – In a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds, Lynn Tech sophomore Edgar Ortega won the fourth annual ?Lynne?s Kids 5K Fun Run/Walk? on Thanksgiving morning while Lynn native Miki Divirgilio won the women?s race in 21:36.The race is a fundraiser for Lynne?s Kids, a nonprofit in memory of Lynne O?Connell, who died in March 2011 just days after learning she had cancer. O?Connell, an attorney, was an advocate for children dealing with the juvenile court system.?Lynne was one of the most respected and revered juvenile attorneys in the area,” said Beth Mooney, a friend of O?Connell?s and a member of the organization?s board. “She served the children of Essex County as a legal advocate for 15 years, and one of her hobbies was running. In 2011 the board came up with the idea of this 5k event, which would not only pay great tribute to her but more importantly raise money for children. She had such a passion to help the youth of our society that if it wasn?t for her, this organization wouldn?t exist today.”The race began in Wyoma Square and traveled around Flax Pond, along the route O?Connell ran almost every morning. “It is not about who wins or loses this race,” Mooney said. “It is about being a part of this event and giving back to children in need.”In 2011, the first year of the event, 125 people signed up. That number grew to 260 this year.
“This was our biggest event yet,” Mooney said. “And I hope that number is eclipsed in 2015.For information or to donate, go to lynneskids.org.
