The West Lynn Pop Warner A team got off to just the start that head coach Maurice Cordy was hoping for on Saturday in its opening game at the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Led by three touchdowns by Alphonso Robinson, West Lynn cruised to a 36-6 win over the Chino, Calif., Colts in the opening round of the Division II Midget bracket.
?Our offense played really well,” Cordy said. “They set the tone from the opening drive.”
The run game was a big key for the Rams success as they gained 238 yards on the ground. The defense, meanwhile, held Chino to only 77 rushing yards and 138 total in the game.
Robinson picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. He added a 25-yard touchdown run later in the half before Ishmael Bangura’s run just before the half sent the Rams to the locker room with a 29-0 lead.
The final touchdown was set up by a 40-yard pass from Tyler Thompson to Darwin Mejia.
Bangura added another touchdown in the second half to increase the lead to 36-0 before Chino scored late in the game.
?The defense gave up a few too many big plays but for the most part they played pretty well,” Cordy said.
The Rams are back in action tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. when they take on the San Jose Saints for a spot in Friday’s national championship game against either the Ward 5 Warriors from Washington, D.C., or the Fair Park, Texas, Cardinals.?San Jose is a pretty good team so we are going to have to key (in) on what they do well and try to take that away,” Cordy said. “It will be a tough game for us but if we can run the ball like we did (Saturday) and take away some of their key things, we will do well.”
